"I'd rather have it all gone." We were at a stop light and he pulled it back before continuing. "It's annoying and heavy and hot and just is everywhere. How do you girls do this all the time? Also this beard thing I have going on is not working for me either," he said a little exasperated.
The light turned green and we continued to make our way through the city. Again, his stoic exterior was melting away and we were back to having more casual conversation. It seemed like if his mind was somewhat distracted, in this case by driving, he was able to respond more naturally.
"How about this?" I asked him, trying to keep the tone and nature in the care light. "I'll get you a razor, and give you a haircut if you tell me what you were dreaming about last night."
I could see his grip on the steering wheel tighten, and his mood shifted slightly. "I'll tell you once we get to your place."
"I understand. Before we get into anything heavy, how about I help you get updated on things from this century?" I turned on the radio and the song Lock Me Up by The Cab came on. "This for example is what music sounds like today and also happens to be one of my personal favorites," I said as I began to nod my head along to it. It had just started so we would get to hear the whole thing.
He looked at the radio for a moment and looked a little weirded out. I knew the music was massively different from what he listened to during his time. As I got more into it, the look on his face changed. I turned it down a bit noticing that it may not have been what he expected.
"Not your type of thing? I asked him.
"It's just a lot different and louder than what they had in my day," he said. I wasn't an expert on music from the 1940's but I am sure it was different. I think they may have still been listening to swing music and going to dance halls. I wasn't familiar with any of that stuff because it wasn't popular and I had no need to know about it.
"Things are different now. I have to get you up to speed with everything somehow though and I figured music was an easy start." I gave him a small smile. "Don't worry. You'll get it all eventually."
We continued to listen to various types of music all the way home, ranging from country, hip hop, jazz, pop, and rock. "I like the slower ones," he said after we finished listening to How to Save a Life by the Fray.
"Well there's a start." By the this time we had arrived at my apartment.
"Pull in here," I said, pointing to the attached parking lot. We found a spot quickly and made our way up to my apartment. It was on the second floor in a corner spot, with the parking garage directly beneath me, a stairwell on one side of me, and a utility room on the other. When I had moved here, I knew I had to have this unit, since there would be less neighbors around me.
I unlocked the door, and let him go in first. He walked in and looked around taking in the entire room. I know he would be looking around, making sure that nothing seemed off. He was doing a quick scan of the room in case anything stood out to him and set off an alarm bells. As he stood there for a second, he looked completely out of place.
It was always just me here so everything was based on my taste. Everything was a mix of white and grays with a few fake green plants just to give it some color. Then there he was, standing in the middle of all of it, looking he didn't belong. I couldn't help but think about any stains that his boots might leave on my white rug in the living room. My nice white apartment would hopefully survive his stay here. If not, well then I guess I was redecorating after he left.
"I can show you were you can stay," I said to him.
"That would be nice," he said. He kept his hands in his pockets still, and followed me from the living room and kitchen area into the hall.
