My heart stopped when I met her eyes, and so did my feet. Aether spun to look at me, then at Eternity back and forth. I could tell this was awkward for him too. He let out a strained chuckle and took my hand into his warm ones. I looked up at his alluring features and sucked in a breath. Now was not the time to pussy out. It was bound to happen sooner or later.

Ignoring the voice in my head calling out my sweaty palms, I gripped Aether's hand a bit tighter and stomped like a troll over to the couple. Gwen began waving enthusiastically when we neared, greeting us kindly while Eternity took a long sip of her coffee, watching out every move through her impossibly long eyelashes. As we sat, Gwen continued to talk, asking us how we had been and how excited she was for all of us hanging out together. I pretended to focus, but I was just watching Eternity. She was silent, her eyes downcast as she traced the rim of her coffee cup. As Gwen began to run out of things to say, Eternity lifted her head. She straightened her posture, back straight, and hands folded neatly on her lap. Clearing her voice, in almost a whisper she asked,
"Alex... How have you been?"
The question had more weight to it than intended. I was tongue-tied. The words were there, I knew what I was going to say, but I couldn't.
"... Well enough." I muttered, voice almost a whisper.
As much as I wanted to talk to her before, I just didn't think the opportunity was going to be now, making things a little tense.
Okay, a lot tense.
Chuckling lowly, she lazily hooks her arm around her lover and leaned back.
"I'm happy for you, really. What happened with us before is simply history." She nodded her head and flashed a smile.
Gwen watched our interaction carefully and beamed at Eternity, shifting closer and leaning her head on her chest.
"It's just us 2 now, don't dwell on the past too much Alex!"
I shifted uncomfortably in my seat. My thoughts were scrabbled. I looked down and started fiddling with my cup, chewing over her words.
"It's in the past..." I repeated, lifting my gaze, "But why?"
With that question, Eternity furrowed her eyebrows deep in thought. Aether looked around stiffly, until he focused on his shoes.
"Alex we- Aether and I... We just- it just happened." She looked guilty, something wasn't adding up.
"That doesn't explain anything. How hard is it to tell me the truth?" My hands were balled up into fists now.

Aether tried to take my hand, but I flicked it off and crossed my arms tight together. He looked guilty, like a puppy who peed on the new carpet. Gwen herself unattached herself from Eternity and struggled to look as happy as she was before. She scooted an inch away from Eternity, and she turned to say something, but no words came out.
After a pregnant silence, Aether surprisingly broke the silence.
"I was confused. About... Everything. Who I liked, who I didn't, Who I could trust and couldn't. Eternity was the same, we were both confused and desperate, unaccepting of our real feelings. So we... tried getting together to shake the feeling off, but obviously, it only made things worse."
My eyes softened, only just. I unraveled my hands and let them fall to my sides. My throat was dry, I didn't know what to say.
"As she said, the past is the past. We don't need each other anymore, because we've found our people." Aether explained.

I heaved a sigh and let my body go of it's tense hold. Resting both hands on the table, I buried my head in my arms. We're both with different people now, why was it so hard to let go? I glanced up from my caged form and vigilantly watched Eternity and Gwens exchange.

The first thing I noticed was the towel where polar opposites. Gwen was blonde, with faded bright pink at the end of her short hair. She dressed with as much colour as possible, seemingly refusing to wear anything that didn't look like a colour of a highlighter. Gwen was outgoing and easy to talk to, people gather round her like a beacon, understandably. The blonde knew just about every hobby anyone could have, ranging from Star Wars fans to Dungeons & Dragons, anything you liked, she would have some knowledge of, and was always up to listening at learning.

Eternity, on the other hand, had coal black hair, and a resting bitch face. From our years of friendship, she's shown me her cold exterior dementor, rude and uncaring, annoyed easily and will not be afraid to fuck you up if you said the wrong thing, under all of this, is a loving and understanding person. She has much gratitude and often worries for peoples safety, even if she had only seen them on the street for a split second. Her love language is playful teasing and light hitting, but if you really need her she'll hold you for days on end until you feel better.

As I silently observe, Gwen is dramatically throwing her hands around, telling a elaborate story of what she did over her weekend. She's loud and often sidetracks into different stories, making the original one drag on, but Eternity only watches in adoration, often asking questions and making Gwen launch into more stories, a small, satisfied smile tugged onto her face, eyes crinkled and shining. From then on, I knew what they had said was the truth, and I could trust them on this.

"Eternity, how have you been? And how did you even manage to pull someone like Gwen? I was throughly convinced you'd die alone at 30 doing some reckless shit." I was smiling wide, it felt good to talk to her like this again.
A smile just as wide as mine was mimicked on Eternity's face as he twisted to me, hands clenched and a sinister look twisted into the smile.
"Oh, you have no fucking idea." She smirked.
