AN: Hey! I thought of this cool headcanon that doesn't really make sense but I hope you enjoy it anyways! It will be a slightly shorter chapter but still
3rd Person POV
Kara and Lena were out on their 4th date. Yes it is silly to say 4th date but both have been keeping detailed mental notes about every single interaction they have had since (and if they were honest) before they started dating.
And considering they have been friends for a couple years at this point Lena was confident she new everything about her blonde girlfriend. Kara trusted her enough to reveal her secret identity and since then they have only grown closer and closer since they FINALLY confessed their feelings for each other.
So one evening when they were sitting on the couch together each with a book in hand, Kara one about the art of making a potsticker, and Lena about the Big Bang and their queer icon playlist playing in the background. Niether woman had any other place they would rather be.
(AN: fun fact I can sing the entire big bang theory theme song by heart)
Kara had a long day of saving people so she wasn't actually reading per say. Her book was resting on top of her face as she closed her eyes and rested a bit.
Lena giggled at a message Sam and Ruby sent her so she says "Kara, Love you have to read this?"
Kara jolts from her position and rubs the near sleep from her eyes as she says "Sorry babe what did you say?"
Lena passes her girlfriend her phone as she says "For someone with superhearing you do miss hear a lot of things." as a complete joke not at all expecting the very serious look she receives from Kara. "Kar? Hun what's wrong?"
"If- If I have kept something else from you-"
"Oh god please don't secretly dying and didn't tell me or something" Lena says panicking a bit.
"NO! NO! I promise I am not dying any more then a normal alien or human would be on a day to day basis." Kara reassures.
"Oh thank Rao"
"But there is something else that only Alex, Eliza, and Alura know about. I mean not even Clarke knows."
"Well that makes me feel better about not being in the loop. You don't have to tell me Kara."
"I know but even though we haven't been together for a long time yet I can see you in my future for the long haul. So I want to tell you."
"Okay as long as you know it's completely up to you on when and if you tell me this Kara, the same way it was about you being Supergirl because I know it was about protecting me."
"Yes I know." Kara takes a deep breath before continuing "I am deaf."
"What?"
"I am deaf. I can't hear anything."
"But one of your powers is-"
"That is what one of my powers is supposed to be. I was born deaf on Krypton. Fun fact sign language is much easier in English then Krptonese." Kara adds with a nervous chuckle.
"Then- How-? What?" Lena says baffled at what her girlfriend is saying but she takes a deep breath "Please explain more. How can you understand what I am saying from a different room? How can you hear when there is crimes going on? Just-"
"Having other supersenses definitely helps. I learned to read lips as a kid when people were speaking a more complex language at a faster pace. So learning how to read lips with superspeed was really really easy in comparison."
"That still doesn't explain how you can know I am talking to you from a different room? I mean I hope you aren't just constantly using your x-ray vision to see if people are trying to talk to you from a different room."
"I don't. The nice thing about my powers and not having one sense the others have gotten better to compensate. I can literally feel the vibrations of words."
"Your kidding that's incredible Kara!"
"It is. Everyone has a slightly different vibration when they speak so that's how I can tell who is speaking when I am wearing my glasses. And the even cooler thing is with my powers I can not only feel the distinctions between who is speaking but I can tell the distinction between what words are being said!"
"Really? Thats fascinating! And insanely impressive!" Lena says thinking about how many words there are in the English language and all the different ways people say them.
"Yep and when I don't quite catch what the word is I just play it off as not having the best hearing as a lot of humans do! It works perfectly. Though that is rare considering I have superpowers, though the times I have lost my powers have been really tough but I got to refresh my ASL which was really nice and it just refined my lip reading even more"
"I am speechless Kara. That is so incredibly amazing I can't even begin to explain..."
"It's really not much. I am just really lucky to have powers to help with my deafness. So many people out there don't have them and don't have access to coclear implants or hearing aids that are ungodly expensive." She says and I could sense the passion in her voice.
I reach back for my phone and quickly call a number as I hold up a finger for Kara to have patience.
"Hey Sam, I want you to start looking into buying the major hearing aid companies on Monday please."
"Of course" She says before saying goodbye and hanging up on her best friend.
"LENA!" Kara exclaims.
"Kara the way you understand words gave me an idea for a new type of hearing aid. I am going to start working on it when I am back in my lab. We can make better more affordable hearing aids for everyone young and old across the entire world, and if I buy the major companies that own hearing aids we can control the prices. This will be perfect and it is something you are clearly passionate about so we can work together on this as partners."
"Lena this- I- I don't know what I was expecting your response to be when I told you that I was deaf but this is above and beyond whatever I was expecting and I love you so much. Thank you."
