"I'm going," she decided, slipping out of his grip. She purposely swayed her hips. They hadn't even kissed since she seduces him to cover her pregnancy. There were moments she wanted to. Moments she considered pushing past it and being the golden couple they were when they first married. And then she saw Liam's green eyes and felt all the defensiveness over David Clarke build.
When Victoria and Lydia drove off, Liam stood in front of the window, his tiny hands pressed to the cold glass. "Mommy," he whimpered over and over. It broke Conrad's heart to see his son so isolated. He was like a puppy waiting on his master.
"Hey little man," he bent down to his son. "You and I will have a great time together." He ran a hand over his sons dusty blonde hair.
"Mommy," he whimpered.
Conrad glanced out the window. "I know, buddy. I miss her too. Are you hungry? We can have lunch." That got Liam's attention and he held Conrad's hand as they walked to the car.
He took Liam to a restaurant that Victoria mentioned he liked. He let Liam get whatever he wanted and was grateful for the time spent with his son. When a server brought a tray of various desserts. Liam pointed to a strawberry cake and Conrad couldn't resist spoiling the boy. It only took two bites for the allergic reaction to start. Conrad had forgotten that Liam was allergic to strawberries. He grabbed the boy, yelling for help.
"I hate when Conrad isn't home," Victoria frowned at the resort as she dropped the receiver.
"Michael says they're working on portable phones," Lydia bragged. "I'll be the first to buy one."
Victoria struggled to not roll her eyes. "I don't think Michael is on the cutting edge of technology."
"You'd be surprised what we know," she scoffed. "We don't spend our evenings raising little b*** children."
"Excuse me?" She demanded.
"I don't have children. And I don't raise charity cases."
"He deserves a family, Lydia." Victoria snapped.
It's hard to look at him and not see that terrorist."
"He wasn't a terrorist."
"We've all made mistakes, Victoria. It's okay. You don't have to punish yourself forever."
"Liam isn't a punishment. He's connected Conrad and I in a way we hadn't been before."
"Clearly. You got pregnant almost immediately after Liam arrived."
"Yes, Conrad finds my maternal instincts quite intoxicating." She raised an eyebrow, knowing how Lydia watched Conrad.
The hotel room phone rang and both women jumped. "This is Mrs Davis," Lydia said, her tone arrogant. "Pity. I'll tell her." She hung the phone up quickly. "Your son is in the emergency room. He had a severe allergic reaction."
Victoria grabbed her purse. "I don't care if you stay or go. I'm going home."
Even though Liam had been released, Conrad was afraid to let him go. He held the sleeping child, rocking him softly.
"I'm so sorry, Liam," he whispered. "I forgot, buddy. I'm sorry." Liam made a soft yawn as his eyes started to flutter.
"Daddy," he whispered as he woke up slowly. He smiled when he saw his dad.
"I love you, little man," Conrad smiled, his eyes watery. "Mommy is coming home. Her and Lydia will be here in a little."
"Lydia," he mumbled, his eyebrows furrowing the way Conrad's did when he was unhappy.
