The judgment came down swiftly and now we await the inevitable. The surrounding air is lit with a brilliant blue and silver glow, reminding us we are in the presence of the Creator. I scan the faces of my fellow angels, watching us apprehensively from their places in the ersatz balcony that hangs above our heads.
Some have their eyebrows furrowed in indignant anger, others look upon us with confusion, their mouths slightly parted and eyes wide. And still, others look at us with pity in their eyes. Those that empathize but will not speak for fear of becoming like us.
I turn my attention to the large group to the right of me. Their faces are different. They welcome this judgment. It is what they have been working towards. To be 'free' of His rule. This is a celebration. Although, I still notice some eyes filled with fear of what is to come. We should not be in this group. We were not a part of this second rebellion. We only loved one another. Angels are not meant to feel human emotions, but we did. We do. We fell in love.
Eros clings to me, his arms wrapped tightly around my waist as tears spill from his eyes. I bury my face in his hair, inhaling the scent of my love and wishing desperately I could change our fate. I lift my head and cup his beautiful face in my hands. His skin is soft against my palms, and I cannot resist but rub my thumbs along his delicate cheeks. I wipe away his tears.
"It is ok, Eros," I reassure him, knowing that nothing is ok. Nothing will ever be the same and I do not know when or if I will see my treasured Angel again. A lump forms in my throat as I hold onto Eros, the harshness of our reality starting to set in. I swallow deeply and close my eyes as tears threaten to spill from my ducts. Eros nods his head from side to side in my hands.
"You don't know that Cassian. You can't say that when you don't know." His voice is low, faltering on the syllables as he tries to hold back his tears.
"I have faith. Faith in my love for you. My love will find you again." Eros' face softens and he blesses me with a small smile across his red lips. I try to commit it to memory.
Eros startles as a loud thunder crack echoes in the surrounding heavens, the divine wrath reverberating within our intertwined souls. We are pariahs in the only place we have ever known.
The air shifts around us, mist gathering at our feet and a light breeze twirling between our bodies, intensifying in power and speed every second. It is time. I place a sweet kiss on Eros' mouth. I do not need to hide my affection for him. Not anymore. I wrap my arms around him as he continues to hold onto me tightly. I kiss his forehead and stare into his eyes.
"I will find you, Eros. I will find you." I promise one more time.
An explosion of wind whips across us, immediately breaking our hold on each other. I see Eros' eyes widen in shock and his arms spring out to reach for me. My love, my treasure, my Angel. I will find you wherever we land.
And then I fall.
