Ruth Foster
I'm half asleep once I feel the bed dip, that alone makes me jolt awake, because I know it's her. I was waiting, and waiting, but eventually got tired. I can't blame her for not wanting me there, but I do blame her, because she promised no more secrets.
"Hey, pretty lady," Orion whispers to me. It's hard to stay mad when she calls me that. It's a first. "I'm here, baby. I'm sorry. I'm sorry." Okay. I can't stay mad, despite how badly I want to. I just can't.
Her hand finds my waist, "Elle, huh?" I quietly mutter to myself, but loud enough for her to hear.
"Yeah, Elle," She replies, gripping my waist.
I feel something in me sink, "The girlfriend."
"Yeah, the girlfriend," Orion clears her throat, "But I would really not want to talk about her. I'd rather talk about my beautiful wife, and how much—"
"Did you fuck her?" The question falls out before I can stop it. I mean—is it really a stupid thing to ask? They both have history together, and it seemed like there was tension, maybe sexual.
Her eyebrow raises, "What?"
"Did you—you know. Did you fuck her?"
"You think I'd do that to you?" Her voice is low, fragile almost. "Ruth, are you out of your mind?"
I don't even know what I'm thinking, maybe I am out of it. "I'm sorry, It was a stupid thought," I attempt to recover, but the awkwardness is still there between us, the awkwardness which I caused.
"You're damn right it was stupid," I feel her hand leave my waist, and her get up from the bed.
I get up after her, following her as she heads into her office out of anger. "Wait, shit." I call out, "I didn't mean to upset you. These things do happen."
"Me cheating on you, isn't just some thing, Ruth." Her voice raises, "I can't believe you think I'd do that to you. I told you it was us against everything. I fucking pinky promised you, and you still have it in your head, that I'm going to fucking hurt you."
"Do you really blame me for thinking that you'd just run back to someone that you have a past with?" My voice raises now, "You do have a past."
"Yeah, we do, but I also thought I made it clear that all I want is a future with you," Her voice lowers, and her hand rubs her temple, almost as if she's fighting off the urge to say one more thing to me.
