The great Madrigals are said to be the most magnificent family throughout Colombia; gifted with beauty, strength, intelligence, a secure family bond close to none, and best of all magical powers bestowed on each child which spread wealth and humility throughout the village of Encanto. I was privileged enough to be enjoying dinner with them - if we made it in time.

My papi was renowned for arriving early however my tio, who I don't remember from my early childhood, apparently was renowned for arriving late.

It was ten to the hour and my tio was still pacing the house, searching for who knows what, while my mami, papi, and I were stood by the door, ready to go since six o'clock.

I had hoped that my papi's affinity for early arrival and my tio's tardiness would equal each other out but as I nervously tracked the minutes that went by, my hope drizzled down the drain; clearly my uncle was much more casual with the Madrigal's than we were, for a start he didn't refer to them as 'the great Madrigals' every time he mentioned them unlike me.

"Tio, what could you possibly be looking for that would take this long to find?" I leaned my head back against the wall out of sheer boredom, "We don't want to be late to dinner with the great Madrigals."

"You don't need to call them that every time, I've known them personally for years, they aren't that great." my tio rooted through his utensil drawer, "Actually, they are that great but it still sounds weird."

"What are you actually looking for, maybe we could help?"

"Well, if I told you, you'd all get mad," tio turned around to face us, wearing a sheepish grin.

I straightened myself, paying attention now, "Why? What are you looking for?" I slowly curved my mouth around each vowel.

"Nothing."

"Nothing?"

"Absolutely nothing."

I balled my fists in frustration, "What do you mean nothing, you've tipped this whole house upside down in the past hour?"

"I knew you'd get mad, don't need Bruno's gift to predict that."

"We have every right to be mad," papi glared at my uncle unbelievable, early attendance was important to him, "Why have we been watching you tear through the house this past hour?"

"Because I didn't want to show up early, I never show up early to events." tio raised his hands in defense, "If I start showing up early just because my brother lives here now then people will start expecting things from me, I don't want responsibilities."

I couldn't decide whether to be annoyed or amused, I simply acted neutral, "Alright, that's over then. Now let's go." I practically leaped through the door  and rest filed out behind me.

Rays of light shrouded the town in pink phosphorescence, a sign of good fortune. It gave me hope for tonight going well, I aspired to make a good impression.

Passersby greeted us and passed small talk with my tio whom they knew but the streets felt desolate compared to the bustling crowds leeching on it earlier in the day. I felt small and my nerves built up.

Papi wrapped his arm around me and squeezed me to his side, "Stop getting worried, if tonight doesn't go well I'm sure it's not the end of the world." papi's reassurance was comforting and I leaned into his side, "These people seem lovely and kind; they won't care about mistakes, I'm sure of it."

I sighed and scraped my feet behind me, "Thank you, papi. You always know what to say."

"I inherited that from your late abuela." he confessed, resting his chin on my head and kissing my hair.
