ricky sighed as he laid onto his back once again, his mind wide awake.
he couldn't sleep.
all he could try and do was rack his brain for any sense of memory from the last three years, but he couldn't. he didn't know how to feel...scared? confused?
one thing was sure that he was definitely saddened and frustrated. everything that had happened tonight. it bothered him that whenever they said something and assumed he'd remember and understand, he just didn't. and when they tried explaining, it just made him feel all the more guilty. it was this constant pressure he'd felt at having to remember everything but his mind just wouldn't cooperate.
ricky looked over to his alarm clock, seeing the time change to 3:09 am and he just exhaled, getting up from the bed to try and quietly go get something to drink.
but as he tip toed down the little hallway, he noticed a light on from the living room. and that's when he could hear it...
crying.
it was faint, quiet and heartbreaking to hear. a frown formed on his face and curiosity overtook him as he neared a little closer to try and get a look as to what was happening.
he spotted nini sitting on the couch, her comforter to the side and her pillows on the floor as she wore his large grey hoodie and stared down at polaroid pictures, tears falling down her face as she sobbed quietly to herself
ricky wanted to walk back to the room...he didn't want to interrupt her privacy or be rude so he turned around, but the next step onto the floorboard made a loud creek and he heard a gasp from her
"h-hello?" she called
closing his eyes, ricky turned back, peeking his head past the wall with a sheepish smile
nini widened her eyes and quickly wiped her tears, sniffling "r-ricky...um-you should be asleep..."
ricky looked down before back up at her "you should be too."
nini glanced at him before shuddering a breath, wiping her tears and forcing herself to stop crying as she quickly put the picture into a little yellow box, shoving it under the couch
"you okay?"
she nodded "f-fine."
ricky exhaled "people who are fine don't cry."
nini shook her head and forced a small smile "i'm fine...i promise."
he decided to let it go, not wanting to push her because she seemed like she could break down again any minute.
"d-did you need something?" she asked in a fragile voice
"oh! um-no, i just wanted to get some milk. i couldn't sleep, so." he explained, making his way to the kitchen and opening the fridge to get the milk out
nini nodded again, hugging herself as she slowly got up and followed him, sitting down at the counter
she watched as he got her a cup too, giving him an appreciative smile before he sat down in front of her and they both stayed in silence for a few
"so...do you want me to make some food? or something?" he offered
nini bit back a light smile as she just shook her head, wiping her tear stains that painted her cheeks
"what?" he asked confused
she let out the weakest laugh and sighed "nothing...just-well, you suck at cooking."
"i do?"
nini nodded "you once made me a burger with a raw patty."
ricky grimaced at that and she nodded again, sitting up a little more
"but we both ate it anyway because i didn't want to hurt your feelings and you were too stubborn to admit that you couldn't cook." she explained, staring at the counter and smiling a little at the memory "and we both got food poisoning and were sick for a whole two weeks and just stayed cooped up in here."
ricky blinked "wow..."
nini nodded "yeah..."
"what did we do for a whole two weeks?" he asked with a chuckle, sitting down in front of her
"we talked, took pictures, wrote songs, watched movies..." she replied before dropping her head down to stare at her lap to hide the blush on her cheeks "and um...other things."
ricky furrowed his eyebrows in confusion "what-" he suddenly stopped and opened his mouth "...oh..."
the silence overcame them once again and he took a deep breath
"so..." he exhaled, clearing his throat to break the sudden tension "uh...do you wanna talk?"
"we are talking." she said with a weak grin, looking up at him
"i mean talk. like...how are you doing?"
nini tapped her fingers against the cup and just shrugged her shoulders, nodding "i'm fine."
ricky raised his eyebrows "nini...come on."
she stared back into his eyes. those eyes that she fell in love with the minute she'd seen him. the ones that used to hold so much adoration for her and only her, now filled with confusion or pity every time she came into his view. and that broke her heart.
nini swallowed, looking down "i...keep looking at pictures of us."
ricky kept his eyes on her as she continued
she wiped her face to prevent tears from falling and sniffled "and...i guess i don't-know how to get you back. how to help you get your memories back because...im lost here. everything that happened is my fault. the accident, your amnesia, and the fact that i lost you—it's all my fault."
not being able to hold it back anymore, her feelings betrayed her and the tears streamed down her face. nini tried biting the inside of her cheek to try and keep herself controlled and calm but it was hard to get a steady breath out.
ricky frowned and slowly stood up, walking around the counter to sit beside her "hey, it's okay. just breathe."
she shook her head and closed her eyes, inhaling and exhaling with the most control she could and feeling ricky's hand slowly move to her back, his thumb tracing soothing circles in comfort and she looked at him.
"sorry..." he muttered, his hand freezing on her back
nini shook her head "n-no, um-it's fine..." she whispered
"it was just..." he looked down and shrugged his shoulders
"instinct."
ricky's gaze lifted back up to her eyes once more and he nodded "yeah...instinct."
