Chalice's POV:

Silence follows Eris's words since me and Mara both have no idea how to respond to what she said. What were we supposed to say anyway? I know she was hurt, we all knew that and we'd all felt it. But why was Eris choosing to implode so many lives with what she was proposing? What good would it do for those who remained from the pack she was talking about? What would it do?

"Are you sure that's a good idea Eri?" Mara asks then, not sure if she's overstepping given the tone she was using. That careful, reserved tone that's kept for when people aren't sure if they can say what's on their mind. "Are you sure that telling them whatever you've found out is the right idea?"

"Or that they don't know it already?" I chip in, seeing how they both looked at me with mixed expressions. "Sorry, just saying," I muttered, throwing my hands in the air and offering up a shrug. "But in all seriousness Eri, Mar. Are you sure you two know what you'd be doing by saying whatever you're thinking of saying? The secrets you'd be spilling?" They look at one another again before Eris sighs and looks back at me, Mara suddenly seeming to be more interested in the outside world than what was happening. "Mar?"

"It's nothing Chal, leave it," She responds in a flat tone that I've never heard from her before. One that has me worried I'd upset her since she was my best friend along with Rosa. Someone I didn't want to lose ever, especially now that we were losing people in this game more and more.

"But Mar-"

"Just drop it." She responds flatly, her tone now more angry than anything else. Something that despite how angry I was making her I wanted to figure out. Why would she snap like that? But as I opened my mouth she glared at me and stood in one fluid motion. "Just drop it, Chalice. Before you regret it."

And with that, she left.

Looking over at Eris she's watching her retreating prodigy with a concerned look that seems all too familiar. The same look I remember people giving Ash when they figured out he'd been possessed to kill Rosa during the first round she played to get her off the board. Could....could that have happened to Mara without us knowing? Could it be happening and we were just missing the signs? Thinking over her behaviour that outburst had been the first out of character since before the four died. In ever actually. So maybe I was just being paranoid?

Or maybe not, after all when Rosa was worried about Ash before he attacked her she said she was just worried but thought he was overtired and that was it. Next minute he was possessed and running after her through the palace to kill her if not for Hunter happening to find the two before he could succeed....or whoever was controlling him could. Seems like not looking into a feeling isn't the way to do it. My subconscious reminds me and I feel my stomach drop when I think about it for too long. Was it right? Was that what was happening to my surviving best friend? Was I losing her too?

I'm about to open my mouth to ask Eris about it only to find she's already looking at me with the same expression. "I'm sure that's not it but I can keep an eye on her for a while if you want, to help ease your mind?" She offers a small smile but I can't find anything to smile about if Amber's managing to do what I think she is. "You think Amber's behind this? Why?" She seems confused but I hate where my train of thoughts is going, assuming I'm right. "Chal?"
