Is It Damned Water Or Holy Water?

The golden lights of the highway flashed over the windows in the car. As I sat in the backseat with my knees to my chest, pissed off at the pain shooting through my legs, I could hear Bo humming from the passenger's seat in front of me. She told me sitting in the back made her carsick, so I didn't hesitate to open the door for her and allow her to sit next to Miles instead.

Her curly hair whipped in the wind as she rolled down her window to take a breath of fresh air. She rocked back and forth on the seat, swaying to the beat of the music playing off of Miles's playlist. After learning that someone roofied her, I couldn't sit still. My knuckles wouldn't crack anymore than they have, and the inability to stretch made it challenging to stay calm.

I realized how much her demeanor changed after leaving Luke. She seemed alert, but she looked at ease in Miles's car. Her small frame fit like a puzzle in his seat. She crossed her legs over one another as she picked at the bottom of her shoes.

"Bo, how are you feeling?"

She looked at me through the mirror. "Who is asking?"

"I am," I rolled my eyes as I shoved water in her direction. "Drink this."

"I don't accept drinks from strangers."

"Bo -"

"Why? I am hydrated," she turned to Miles. "Right? Do I look like dry?"

"No," Miles chuckled at her. "You don't."

"Drink the damn water."

"Who died and made you boss? Don't say my mom," she snickered. "That was dark. I shouldn't have said that."

"Please, drink the water," my voice softened.

"No," she crossed her arms. "Do you understand that I am independent?"

Miles stifled his laughter at her authoritative voice. "Bo, drink the damn water and stop being difficult."

"Is it damned water or holy water?" She read the label. "Oh, it's Fiji! My favorite!"

She gushed turning to Miles. "How did you know?"

"It's the best friend's job to know," he winked at her.

A toothy grin grew on her face. She scooted as close to him until her thigh hit the middle console. When she couldn't get any further, she placed her head on his shoulder. I rolled my eyes again - not because I'm jealous because I'm certainly not - but she's loving on Miles and he's not the one who gave her the water. She drives me crazy. Every little thing about her makes my head spin.

Before we pulled to a stop, I could see the fire burning from the road. The sound of fire crackling broke the silence when he cut the engine. I threw the door open, letting out a deep breath at the ability to stretch.

I pulled Bo's door open and her little head popped up. "Oh, thank you!"

Her chippy mood made me comfortable. I lent out my hand to her as I opened the passenger's door. She looked at the burns on my hand with a look of skepticism on her face. It made me wonder if she didn't want to see what they felt like, but I realized that wasn't the case as she blushed and shied away.

"What are you being shy for?"

She slipped her hand into mine, shaking her head. "You make me nervous."

Her rosy cheeks tilted down as she stared at the ground. I gripped her chin between my fingers softly as I brought her eyes to focus on me. The smoothness of her face caught me off guard. I adored how soft she felt under my touch.

"Don't ne nervous, it's just me."

She cleared her throat. "I always make a fool of myself in front of you."
