Togata didn't believe his ears when he was told that Midoriya was captured and restrained. And when he did believe it, another problem occurred—Togata had to see Midoriya, but no one wanted to allow it.
"It's too dangerous." All Might attempted to coax Togata back into his seat, concern etched on his face as he glanced at Nighteye by his side. "We don't know whether or not he can break out, and if he can, he might come after you first. We can't allow that."
"This is nonsense, you know that, right?" Togata shook his head as he attempted to retort, looking up at Nighteye in hope for support. "Why would he bother letting himself be captured just to kill me? That's just...it doesn't make any sense, hear yourself!"
"Toshinori is right, Mirio." Nighteye stated with a sigh, fixing his glasses as he averted his eyes. "Although you may not like the reasoning, it's the risk we want to avoid, no matter how small."
"I might get him to talk to me, though!" Togata continued to insist, the two men shaking their heads in refute as they tuned out his protests. "Who knows? Maybe it'll work...!"
"I didn't lie when I said I'd have your back."
"...I'll get a chance to explain myself some day."
Those were Midoriya's last words, and they had to have meant something. If Midoriya didn't care, he would've just sprinted as soon as he was questioned, without saying anything. And yet, Midoriya didn't. That had to mean he had some sort of humanity in him, right? Just because he had All for One, just because he was a villain...that didn't mean he was completely hopeless. He was still a teenager, and still Togata's friend, and unless Midoriya coldly stated otherwise directly to him, Togata wouldn't step back.
That's why he stomped away from his two mentors. They called after him, but realizing that he wasn't going to listen to anything they told him, they left him be. Midoriya was well guarded, and without authorization, Togata wouldn't be allowed to see him anyway.
The problem was, Togata had other people he could persuade.
"Mr. Aizawa!" Togata called out as he noticed the pro hero walking down the hall, a frown on his face as he glared at a stack of papers in his hands.
"Togata." Aizawa greeted in acknowledgment, stopping as Togata caught up with him. Togata let out a quick sigh of exhaustion, his wounds having still not fully healed and his energy at an unusual low, before he straightened and began to speak.
"Listen, I know that you might not like the idea, but I want to go talk to Midoriya." Togata decided to be blunt with his approach, knowing that beating around the bush was definitely not going to work with the man in front of him. Aizawa pursed his lips, his eyes lowering as he exhaled from his nose, and that gesture alone was already alarming.
"I–"
"I might be able to get him to talk!" Togata continued, doing his best to keep his voice down as his heart beat erratically in his chest. "There's a chance he might want to speak to me."
"Why?" Aizawa questioned simply. Togata hesitated as he tried to interpret what the question meant.
"Why, what?"
"Why do you think he'll talk to you? And why do you want to talk to him?" Aizawa lowered his papers as he scanned Togata's face, as if trying to read the meaning behind his words. "After he took away your quirk, you seem quite keen on chatting. Do you want to ask him for your quirk back? Do you really think you'll be able to convince him?"
"It's not all about the quirks!" Togata exclaimed exasperatedly. "I need to talk to him. There's something I need to clear up, and if it goes smoothly, I might be able to clear up a few things from him about his connections and all that."
