A/N: requested by paxleviathan (heyy ily i hope you like thisss), set during Rogue One, someone agree with me that the picture above is pure sadness :,(
Warnings: sadness
Word count: 660 (sorry it's short)
You miss him. You miss the way he used to hold you. You miss the way the two of you used to smile at each other. You miss the way he used to gaze at you, as if you were the only person alive. You miss his sweet, sad brown eyes. You miss your late night talks. You miss your stolen kisses. You miss his hand in yours. You miss the connection between you, buzzing with the feeling of closeness as you lay beside each other.
But he's far away, across the galaxy. Far enough that you can't speak to him through the link between the two of you; forged by the Force. You can barely feel his strongest feelings, but even then, you're grateful for them because it's at least a glimpse of him and how he's doing.
A few months ago, your jobs pulled the two of you apart. He was needed as a pilot, and you were needed as one of the very few Force sensitive people on the side of the Rebellion. Currently, you sit, curled up on your bunk, thinking of him, remembering the too short moments the two of you shared.
Closing your eyes, you tip your head back and lean it against the wall, trying to reach out to him. Whenever you've tried this before, it's come back futile, but you still cling onto the sliver of hope that somehow he'll have moved into the same system as you and you'll be able to feel the presence of his mind brush against yours.
Your conscience spirals through the galaxy in your mind's eye, searching for the familiar touch of his. Clutching your trembling hands together, you clench them into white knuckled fists as you sense a wisp of his being and grab onto it desperately. Breaths coming out in sharp, uneven gasps, you scrabble for it, trying to keep yourself in that dark corner of the galaxy, so far away from you.
'Cassian,' you whisper, out loud and in your mind.
The answer is weak and faint, as if he's calling to you from the other end of a long tunnel.
Y/N?
You get up onto your feet in shock. What -
Without a warning, your conscience is thrown down next to his, and you're aware of him, on a beach somewhere, tears in his eyes as he stares right through you, off at something that you can't see, something that reflects bright in his eyes as it closes in.
Cassian? You ask, unsure. Cassian? Where - where are you?
Scarif. He answers, his eyes focusing on yours now. I... I won't be seeing you again.
What - Cass - You sob, reaching out to him, and he takes your hand, pressing your knuckles to his lips and looking up at you, infinite tenderness in his eyes.
I'm so sorry, Y/N. I... I love you.
Don't - don't leave me alone, Cass, you beg. Please.
I'm sorry, he repeats, drawing you to him and enclosing you in his arms. You bury your face into his chest, fingers fisting in his shirt as he holds you. Sobs tear themselves from your throat, tears running down your face as you cling onto each other, desperate for just a few more seconds together.
I love you too, Cass. I - I wish we'd had more time.
He kisses your forehead, tilting your face up to look into your eyes. Me too.
His body disintegrates in your hands, turning to ash, and you're hurled back into your own body, standing in the middle of your bunk, staring into space. You fall to your knees, burying your face in your hands. He's gone. It feels like he tore a part of your heart with him, and it's mixed with his ashes, halfway across the galaxy on Scarif. A sob squeezes from your throat, and you collapse on the floor, his last words to you echoing through your head.
I should've married you.
