I gripped Ivy's waist with one hand, my foot pushing hers off the gas pedal. I pushed her with my hip so that she sat between her brother and I, wrenching her hands free of the wheel so that I was now in the driver's seat. "You wouldn't be able to find the house," I explained, having noticed her brows furrow when I took her spot. The three of us sat in silence. Complete silence. I could hear no thoughts but my own. Like so many other moments I've had with my favorite Swan, I could hear my thoughts and my thoughts only. If we were in any other situation, I may have considered this feeling like a breath of fresh air.
Lights flared suddenly behind us. Beau stared out the back window, eyes wide with horror.
"It's just Alice," I reassured them. I took Ivy's hand again, lacing my fingers with hers. I notice her shiver at the cold temperature of mine. I glance at her for any sign of her wanting me to remove it but she, instead, squeezes my hand.
"The tracker?" Ivy whispers, sounding exhausted. She blinked against the tears that streamed down her face and then splashed down on my hoodie which she still wore.
"He heard the end of your performance," I said grimly, glaring at the road ahead as Alice speed up Emmet's jeep so that we were diving side by side.
"Charlie?" Beau's voice cracked in dread.
He's following now, Alice thought. She could hear Beau's whisper easily over the grind of the engine. Emmett's still waiting till he's clear of the house.
"He's safe. The tracker followed us," I assure Beau. "He's running behind us now."
That did not comfort either of Swan siblings. Ivy shuddered at that, leaning into me. Ivy's breath caught and then she whispered, "Can we outrun him?"
"No," I admitted. Not in this ridiculous truck. But that didn't stop me from speeding up as I spoke. The truck's engine whined in protest.
Alice was watching all the futures related to Charlie that she could perceive. A human she'd never met was not the easiest subject for her. But it didn't look as if the hunter or his apprehensive companion had any plans to return.
Emmett was running in the road behind us now. I was surprised by his intentions. I would have expected he'd be itching to catch the tracker in pursuit, to bring this ordeal to a quick and violent end. Instead, his thoughts were focused on the Swan siblings. Their safety was his current priority. It was all of our current priorities.
Ivy and Beau seemed to bring out everyone's (mostly mine) protective side. I was both comforted and baffled by this.
Emmett made a running leap that propelled him over the Jeep and into the bed of the truck. I fought with the steering wheel as the truck reacted.
Beau shrieked, his voice rasping with the effort. I covered his mouth, muffling the sound so he could hear me. "It's Emmett," I said.
The human boy inhaled through his nose, slumping again after I freed his mouth. I pulled Ivy tighter against my side. It felt as if every muscle in her body were trembling.
"It's okay, my love. You're going to be safe," I murmured. It didn't feel like she'd even heard me speak. The tremors continued. Her breath came quick and shallow.
I tried to distract her but instead got distracted, myself. A vision of flying through the Hogwarts quidditch stadium flashed in my mind for merrily a split second, but it was enough for the memory to fully return. Ivy fidgeted, sitting up a little straighter, seeming to have had a similar experience. Neither of us spoke about it now. Beau was still in the truck and now was not the time to discuss Cedric and Jennifer.
