The Glade

In light of what had happened the previous night, Newt had arisen earlier than most boys.

His plan was simple, really.

Get up, get showered and prepared for his next few hours in the Maze. He had known from the very beginning that the entire day would be spent mourning the loss of, yet another, Glader. That, although he was aware that now - more than ever - was the time to be searching for an escape to this place, his brain would not allow him to concentrate on such a task, for it was fixated solely on George, and the images from the night before.

Still, he tittered away into the labyrinth, keeping his footfalls light and his pace slower than normal as he floundered up the first few corridors.

It was not until he was much deeper into the Maze that Newt discovered that something sinister was afoot. He heard voices - two, to be exact. A boy and a girl, and as he drew closer towards the next corner and gradually peaked around the edge, that is when he saw the faint figures of Dan and Adeline rushing into the next passageway.

He recalls thinking it rather peculiar, to find two Gladers who are not runners delving so far into the Maze, and in an effort to get a better understanding as to why they were there, Newt had decided to follow them. He would stand by a corner, with only his head poking out into view, his eyes trained directly onto their backs before watching them rush away, and scampering up the corridor behind them.

It did not take long for the runner to realise that this was not a simple case of two Gladers going where they should not, but in fact, it was something much more serious.

That was confirmed to him when he heard the sound of Adeline's feet scuffing against the concrete, followed by her screams as she tried tirelessly to get away.

Of course, as any other Glader would do, he ran after them, calling out to the builder and commanding him to stop and set the young girl free. When the pair had stopped dead in their tracks and turned to face Newt, two things became crystal clear to him.

One; Dan was most certainly not expecting any runners to be around at such a time, and two; he did not appreciate the fact that Newt was trying to apprehend him.

Almost instantly, the builder had charged for him, and with them only being a few meters apart, Newt knew that he had to think fast.

Rather than facing Dan head on, the runner had opted for a different approach. He spun on his heel, and sprinted away, in the hopes that he could draw the boy far enough away from Adeline so that she may escape, and make it back to the Glade unharmed.

He could feel the boy getting closer with every step he took, and so, Newt did the only other thing he could think of at the time.

He climbed.

Gripping onto the first vine his hand touched, the runner pushed his feet from the ground and grappled them to the wall. From there, he ascended as quickly as he could, trying to get away from the builder perusing him, and not really giving much thought to the ivy and the way it began wrapping tightly around his limbs.

Then, with his hand not quite managing to reach the next trailing of ivy, and his ankle completely intertwined within the vines, he fell.

And then, he woke up in the Medhut...

Pretty believable story, right?

Nick certainly thinks so.

He had stated that it was within Newt's best interests to deceive the boys and make them think that Dan had captured Adeline, taken her hostage, and caused him to end up in such a way. That, if the runner truly wanted nobody to ever find out the real reasoning for his injuries, that it only made sense to do so, and in his weakened and fragile state, Newt had agreed to it all. With not so much as one query or disagreement fluttering from his lips.
