The Scorch

"Okay."
"No."

Adeline can see Daniel whipping his head around to look at her through her peripheral, but she does not dare glance back. Instead, she darts her eyes down to the table in the middle of the room, and stubbornly crosses her arms over her chest, shuffling her shoulders slightly whilst pushing her fingers further into the crook of her arms.

Daniel simply stands for a moment, his mouth agape and his eyes widened, his glare practically boring tiny holes into the side of Adeline's head. When she makes no move to look at him, he scoffs, throwing his head back in exasperation before flitting his vision over to Maggie. "How much time do we have?"

"Plenty of it. Travis ain't gonna leave without me" the blonde responds, shifting her feet against the ceramic tiled flooring, feeling incredibly awkward in the company of these two kids.

"Great!" Daniel exclaims, turning back to face Adeline and smacking his palms against the side of his thighs. "Can you give us a minute, Maggie?" he asks, not removing his eyes from the redhead, "I need to talk to Addy."

"Uh, sure" Maggie agrees. Glancing down to the table in front of her, she bundles up her radio and gun before briskly shuffling through the room and brushing past the pair at the door.

Daniel's eyes follow the small blonde along the edge of the room, waiting until she has walked out completely to turn and address Adeline. "What's your problem?" he questions, parting his feet on the ground and stuffing his hands deep into his pockets, with only his thumbs being visible as they hook over the hem of the fabric.

"My problem?!" Adeline spits, stepping around to the other side of the table whilst staring at the boy in disbelief.

"Yes, your problem" the boy repeats, tilting his upper body forward slightly and motioning towards her. "We have a chance at going somewhere that's actually safe, and you're being a dick about it!"

"No, Daniel, I'm not being a dick. I'm being sensible" Adeline counters, stepping forward and bending her hands down on the table, much like Maggie had done a few minutes prior. "We don't know her, or her people! And you're willing to go with her just because she said it's safe? We can't trust that."

"But-"

"Do you remember" the redhead starts, cutting Daniel off before he even gets a chance to respond. She pushes herself back from the table and crosses her arms over her chest while slowly trailing from one side of the room to the other. "When we met that group a couple of months back? And they promised us the exact same thing that Maggie is?"

Casting a quick glance over to the boy, Adeline waits for him to gently nod his head in agreement before continuing, "and do you remember what happened?" she asks, her brows raised slightly as she looks to him expectantly.

Daniel releases a small huff and rolls his eyes, feeling himself beginning to grow rather impatient with the girl stood in front of him. "Yes" he starts, "they tried to-"

"They tried to kill us!" the girl interjects once more, throwing her body forward until her entire palm flattens down on the dirty table. She knows that there are only a few things Daniel despises, and being cut off mid-sentence is one of them. Adeline can see the frustration building up in the boys eyes from her doing so, but right now she finds that she does not really give a shit.

"They tried to kill us" she repeats, this time her tone slightly more levelled than before. "They waited until we were asleep and they set a bunch of those things, those... Cranks on us and left us to die! It was just by sheer luck that we managed to get out alive!"
