The Scorch

But just as she reaches the top, and just when Daniel has his mouth open and ready to congratulate her for going a whole day without injury, the young girl falls.

To the right, just off the edge of the handrail, with her arms and legs flailing for a moment before her hip crashes into the metal barrier at the top, her body twists around, and she lands on her backside.

A snort pushes its way through Daniel's lips, followed by the side of his fist raising to his mouth and a tiny cough as he attempts to stifle his laughter. "You know" he starts, stepping towards the girl and extending his hand down for her to take, "you are literally the most organised person I've ever met and yet, you're also the stupidest one."

"Shut up" Adeline mutters in response. Clutching onto her stomach and curling her legs close to her chest, she releases a haggard groan, merged in with a few coughs as she rolls her body to the side.

Daniel only gives her a few more seconds of squirming on the ground before leaning down, wrapping his hands around her upper arm and back, and hoisting her up. "Come on" he grunts, hauling her arm over his shoulder, "let's just try to walk the next thirty seconds without you hurting yourself, yea?"

"Uh huh" she mumbles, keeping her eyes glued shut and allowing Daniel to guide her through the shopping mall.

It does not take the pair long to reach their humble abode, and fortunately, they manage to arrive there without anymore visits from one of those nasty creatures that lurk on the floors below.

Reaching a set of rusty shutters in front an old, abandoned book store, Daniel releases the girl and leans his body to the left slightly, his hand stuffed deep into his pockets as he searches for the key to unlock the barrier.

Adeline leans on the wall a meter or so away from the boy, keeping her hands tightly clutching onto her stomach and feeling the wetness of her blood beneath her palms.

Once the entry to their home has been opened, with the shutter floating a few feet from the floor, Daniel takes a step back, swaying his arms down towards it and motioning for her to go first. "Age before beauty" he mutters, a slightly proud look on his face as he taunts her.

"Shut up" she scoffs, a small smile creeping its way onto her lips as she hunches down on her hands and knees and crawls under the gap. "We don't even know how old we are."

The young girl gets as far as the middle of her back lightly scraping against the bottom of the shutter before her body flies forward, and she feels the sting from Daniel's shoe kicking against her backside. She lets out a small squeal, tumbling to the ground with her chin scratching against the grainy tiles.

"See?" Daniel pipes up, crouching down and shuffling under the barrier before standing up and looking at her with a smirk, "couldn't even make it back home without an injury."

Adeline shuffles herself forward on the ground, pulling her legs away from the opening and lightly glaring up to the boy as she twists her body around and sits up. "I swear I hate you more and more everyday."

"Listen" he begins, bending over and pulling the shutter down before hunching down and putting the tiny padlock back on to lock them in, "it's just payback for you making me blind."

"First of all; you're not blind. You can still see out your right eye" Adeline responds, standing up and brushing the sand from her clothes. "And secondly; it was not my fault, okay? You were the one who decided to get all up in that creatures business."
