Your pov.
School was very different when you finally got to go back, for two reasons. One, apparently, word of your accident had gotten around. People talked to you, gave you concerned looks, introduced themselves, asked you if you were okay, if there was anything they could do to help. Get away from me, you always thought. You hardly remembered anyone, except one girl who said her name was Bree, and whom you only met because she picked up your pencil after you dropped it. She was nice enough, and made sure everyone gave you some space. Which was a good thing, considering every loud noise triggered a headache.
But the other differemt thing was Conner. Suddenly, you were more than friends. You weren't entirely sure what that meant, but it sure felt different. When you guys passed in the halls, or saw each other in general, your heart felt like it had just drunk fifteen cups of coffee. You smiled at each other and talked every second you could, being partners with him for everything. People gave you weird looks, especially some of the other girls, but you didn't care.
Now it was November, and freezing outside, and you were walking to school with Conner. You guys had worked out that you would meet him at the bus stop halfway to the school, and from there you two would walk together.
"How have you been doing?" Conner asked, like he did everyday. He was always concerned about your head.
"Oh, same as yesterday. I could be better, could be worse," you smiled. "I could be dead."
Conner gave you a weak smile in return, trying his best not to look concerned.
You frowned. "What's wrong?" You asked him. He wasn't doing a good job at hiding his feelings.
He sighed, his breath coming out in little huffs. "I just, it's been weeks now. And the doctors still don't know what's going on. You still get headaches."
You rolled your eyes. "Yeah, I do, but they're so much better than they used to be. I can turn on a light without a migraine, and roll my eyes, and I can stand a little noise."
He crinkled his nose. "Yeah, but you have to wait, like, twenty minutes for your eyes to really adjust to light. And you can hardly handle the noise of a yell, and you can only roll your eyes about twice before pain comes." He sighed. "I just want you to be better."
You smiled. You couldn't help it, despite tbe serious subject. He was just so sweet. "Conner, there's nothing you can do about it. And hey, I am getting better. Stop worrying, okay?"
He sighed, but gave you a small smile. "Okay."
"Conner!" Someone called. When you turned around, you saw Jack and George running to catch up with you guys.
You waited for them, giggling when they had to huff and huff before they could speak.
"Ugh, I need to get in shape," George wheezed.
Jack nodded, coughing. "Yeah, me too."
Conner laughed, and you felt your face heat up at the sound.
He has such a cute laugh, you thought.
"Did you get the math homework done?" George asked as they started walking again a few moments later.
Conner and I nodded in unison, and Jack gave us a half smile as he watched us walk. We were almost touching.
"Did you?" George asked Jack, waiting for an answer. Lately, he had been very pushy with Jack to get his work done, probably because people were starting to talk bad about him behind his back. Sometimes, They said it to his face. Thing s like 'you screw off' and 'you'll never be able to concentrate.'
Jack stared at the ground. "Well..." He began. "I got two pages done?"
"Was that a question?" Conner wondered aloud.
Jack rolled his eyes. "Oh, it's fine. I have a study hall fifth period. I'll do it then."
George sighed. "Fine."
You laughed. "Oh, lighten up. I need to finish a page, too."
George glared at you. "I thought you said you were done!"
You shrugged, smirking. Conner chuckled under his breath, and Jack looked relieved that he wasn't the only one.
The group arrived at school just then, and went their went separate ways, Conner and you to Study hall, Jack to Science, and George to Math.
You sank into your seat next to Conner. There were only a few people in class, most of which were goofing off and not doing there work. The teacher had yet arrive.
"Are you gonna do your math?" Conner asked, gesturing to your backpack.
"Nah. I'll do it during lunch," you replied.
Conner laughed. "You are such a procrastinator."
You smirked. "That's me."
"Hey," a voice said, and you looked up to find Bree. She had a cool green sweater with a silver necklace and jeans on. It was weird how you never noticed her before, and now she seemed to be everywhere. She was even in, like, five of your classes.
"Hey," you replied.
She sat in the seat in front of you. "How's it going?" She asked.
"Fine," you said.
"What did the doctor say?" She persisted. You had told her that you had an appointment the day before.
You sighed. "Nothing different."
She nodded, furrowing her eyebrows. "Guess that's a good thing, or it could be. I guess."
You smiled. She had a good way of putting a positive spin on things, even if she didn't realize she was doing it.
Just then, a huge clank sounded from the front of the room. Someone had knocked over a desk while playing catch with the tape.
You reached up and touched your head, wincing as static crackled in your ears. A headache flared, and you closed your eyes to try to silence it.
"Are you okay?" Conner asked, reaching out to grab your hand to give it a reassuring squeeze. After he was done, he still held on to it.
You took a deep breath. "Yeah. I'm fine."
Bree was glaring daggers at the person who had knocked the desk over, and if looks could kill, they'd have been on the ground in a puddle of their own blood. The person who had done it was a girl with short black hair. She didn't look sorry at all, even though she knew that she had hurt you.
Conner squeezed your hand again. "Really, you're alright?"
You forced a smile. "Yeah. Trust me, I'm okay."
Bree looked back at you and said, "Okay, I'm mad now, and need to cool off. Let's go do something."
You nodded even though your head still hurt. "Let's go to the library. It's so peaceful in there."
Conner agreed, and the three of you signed out and headed down the hall. You were still holding Conner's hand.
However, on the way to the library, you saw something very interesting. Something that made your blood boil.
Something very, very mean and bad.
And it was happening to one of your best friends.
