Being friends with Aoibhe again was amazing. Robyn knew it was only a couple days since she had been away from her, but she missed her so much. After finishing their talk about Charlie they immediately went into the Yule Ball "OMG ASK ALICIA" was the first thing Aoibhe said "I don't know..." Robyn replied unsurely "COME ON ROBYN, GET OVER YOUR INTERNALIZED HOMOPHOBIA AND ASK HER!" Aoibhe practically screamed at Robyn. Robyn felt the familiar pit in her stomach at the thought of being out with Alicia, but at the same time, it mingled with thoughts of holding the girls hand, and kissing her in public... Robyn sat there for several moments letting these feelings mingle before she felt the touch of Aoibhe's hand against her arm.
"Listen, Robyn... I know the ideals your dad always set up for you, and I know you're scared... But you don't need to live in his expectations anymore! I see the way you look at Alicia, I can tell you want to be with her!" When Robyn doesn't respond, Aoibhe continues cautiously "I'll never judge you for who you are, Robyn. If you tell me right now that I'm wrong, and that you don't like Alicia like that, I'll let it go. But please, if you do, just try, for me?" Robyn looks up at Aoibhe with this, and wraps her arms tightly around the girls neck. She knew it would be hard to overtake the constant thought of disappointing her father, but Aoibhe was right, it was time for her to break free, and be who she wanted to be. "Thank you" is all Robyn managed before going to bed that night, thoughts of Alicia dancing around her head.
It was now 4 days before the Yule Ball and Robyn still hadn't asked Alicia, she wanted to, but it seemed there was never a right time, and although Aoibhe never said anything directly, Robyn could tell she was waiting.. "Come on Robyn! Its not that hard!" She said one day in the common room as Robyn stared at Alicia "Okay, if it's not that hard, ask Fred" Robyn replies as she turns to look at Aoibhe. She immediately goes red in the face "Why would I do that?" Aoibhe said, looking over at Fred and George at the table opposite them "Oh please! I've seen you two getting more buddy buddy over the last week! Don't pretend like you don't know what Im talking about" Aoibhe looks back at Robyn, a look of pure determination on her face "Alright then" she says, "Wait Aoibhe I was just-" but before Robyn can finish Aoibhe has already gotten up and moved across the room to Fred. She watches from afar as Aoibhe goes up to him and asks the question, he smiles at her as his mouth forms the word 'sure' Aoibhe turns back and sits down "easy, now your turn" Robyn looks at her in amazement "but-" she starts "Ah ah ah! Go along now!" Aoibhe says, shooing Robyn off "I'll do it tomorrow," she starts, but continues at the look of skepticism on Aoibhe's face "I just don't want to ask in front of everyone!" Aoibhe rolls her eyes and the two continue on the homework they had come here to do in the first place.
The next morning Robyn is shaking all over as she gets up and dressed, ready to ask Alicia to the ball. It wasn't going to be easy, and Robyn was scared beyond thought that Alicia would say no, but if this was the next step to breaking free, she had to do it. For herself.
Robyn goes outside and Alicia's waiting for her like always "Good morning" she says with a smile on her face, "Morning" Robyn replies. The two walk down the stairs and out the portrait hole, but before they continue further Alicia stops and grabs Robyn's hands "Are you alright, Robyn??" She says, a note of worry in her voice "Your hands are shaking" Robyn looks up at her and swallows, it's now or never, right?
"Willwyougototheyileballithme?" Robyn says in a hurried mush of words "I'm sorry what?" Alicia says with a laugh. Robyn takes a deep breath, closing her eyes, and looks back at Alicia "Will you go to the Yule Ball with me?" Alicia looks at her in amazement "Oh" immediately Robyn's face falls and Alicia, catching this, follows "Robyn I would love to but-" there's a definite fight of emotions in Alicia's eyes "No! I get it! I'm sorry I asked" Robyn says hurriedly and she starts to turn back towards the portrait hole, fighting the emotions about to break out of her.
"Robyn-" Alicia tries to say but Robyn interrupts again "It's fine, really, now excuse me while I go burry myself alive" she starts to walk into the common room when Alicia grabs her arm and turns her around, kissing her passionately full on the lips "I want to go to the Yule Ball with you" Alicia says, their foreheads together "But I... I can't. Not yet" Robyn nods at this, understanding dawning upon her "Can we just keep this for now?" Alicia says, pulling back from Robyn. She nods silently and Alicia smiles, the two continuing down to the great hall.
As soon as Robyn gets into the great hall with Aoibhe and the twins she's bombarded with questions "Did you ask her, Robyn?? Did she say yes? Are you two going together?? Oh you'd both be so cute!!" Robyn tries to calm Aoibhe down as she tells her exactly what happened that morning "...but why doesn't she want to be seen in public with you?" Aoibhe asks "That seems a bit suspicious to me" George chimes in "She just isn't ready for that step" Robyn says, shrugging "And your alright with that?" Aoibhe says questioningly "I guess" Robyn replies, although she didn't really give it much thought before... Why didn't she want to be seen with you? Surely it was just because she wasn't ready, not for any other reason...?
It's come to the end of the semester, winter break starting the next day. However nearly everyone is staying at Hogwarts this Christmas, none of them wanting to miss the excitement of the Yule Ball. Robyn and Alicia had started hanging out outside of just the walks in the mornings, during that time they had both decided to go with different people to the Yule Ball but meet up during it. Alicia explaining that she wasn't quite ready to define anything with herself yet.
But despite that, the hidden moments with Alicia made it all worth it. Robyn felt more herself than any other time in the past years at Hogwarts. Even if Alicia wasn't ready, Robyn was happy with the time they spent together. It was hard sometimes, finally feeling as though she could be open to the world, but hiding still because of Alicia, but she genuinely cared for Alicia enough that she didn't mind too much in the end.
The day of the Yule Ball was hectic to say the least. Aoibhe was very mad that Robyn was going with a Beaubaxtons boy and not Alicia, for she had planned a whole outfit out for her revolving around Alicia's "Its fine! I guess I'll just use a color changing spell!" Aoibhe herself was dressed beautifully, in a floor length green satin dress, a slit going up the middle with spaghetti straps and a plunging neckline. She had done her hair up in an elegant twist and paired it all with black heels and a tiny bag. Robyn was in the bathroom putting on her dress when Aoibhe shouted from the outside "Hurry up! I want to see you!" Robyn comes out in a stunning light blue floor length dress, beautiful flowered lace across the top and fading into the bottom, her hair is down and curled, and she has matching blue shoes and pearl jewelry and immediately Aoibhe's jaw drops "Oh, Alicia is gonna be sorry she didn't go with you out right"
