The wet pavement was too loud under her feet as she walked along the middle of the road. Houses lit up, extra cars showing where family reunions were happening. Small shouts of joy as people played games.
She had a family once.
Her feet made too much noise. She quickened her pace, the pavement screeched under her feet with every step until she was sprinting away. It was too much. Too much. Too much. Too much. She spread out her arms and jumped, wishing she could fly away. Fly into the sky and be weightless. But she fell onto the street bitterly.
Her breath heaving she ran more. Ran as fast as she could out of that brightly lit concrete suburbia, ran as fast as she could away from everything and everyone wishing for the magic she had once known, collapsing onto the forest floor panting.
Her back aches from where wings once sprouted. Her eyes burned with tears as it set in that he really was never coming back.
Her best friend.
He was so kind, so pretty, so happy all the time. And now he was gone. She'd never see his smile, he'd never pull her up in the morning and make her coffee, he'd never excitedly show her his art again, he'd never drag her out on another adventure again. Never again show his bright lights or gaze longingly at gems in store windows. She'd miss it all.
