A couple of days in Nikolai was back to acting like Sturmhond. Which probably doesn't make sense since they're the same person. But hopefully, you know what I mean. He cut the dramatics of trying to apologize to me and realized I wasn't going to forgive. At least not now.
So we started to get ready for the long trip to Os Alta.
The morning we were about to leave for Os Alta Nikolai gave Alina a new kefta. True to her colors Alina packed it in a suitcase. I rolled my eyes in annoyance. I spotted Mal and ran next to him to figure out what was happening leaving Alina and Nikolai to talk amongst themselves.
"Oretsev, what are we doing, is he going to talk to her all day?" I groaned.
"Let me grab you a coat," Mal said ignoring the question and walking into a tent he came out with an army green coat, "they are getting on the horses. Join me?"
"Yeah." My eyes seemed to wander towards Alina and Nikolai. They were on their way to the horses too. Nikolai helped Alina up.
"You're scowling," Mal whispered.
"No, I'm not." I trudged myself on the horse in front of me.
"Sure."
I glared at stupid Malyen Oretsev. "Stop beating me up because you have a prince flirting with your girlfriend." Mal simply glared at me and looked away.
"Amelia!" Nikolai shouted I turned the reins on my horse. "What?" I was trying to sound civil but it was more of a snap.
"Go to the front I'll be there. You to tracker. We need some good tracking skills." He smirked at Alina beside him.
I felt my heart clench for some reason. It was stupid. Maybe life stressed me out so much that I'm finally having a heart attack. That would be lovely.
"Amelia! Are you listening?"
"Yes. I got it!" I steered my horse to the front.
Mal followed me to the front. We listened to Nikolai give instructions to everyone. I yawned and almost fell asleep on the horse. Who the heck gets up this early?
It took a while to get to Kribirsk and I caught myself thinking about the Darkling. What if we never found a Sun Summoner? How in the world would he use me to expand it? Would I still have fallen for his tricks and fell in love with him?
That's when I stopped in my tracks. I looked at a large wall, a list of people that died from the expansion.
A baby. eight months old. Sasha Penkin.
I tried my best not to cry but I couldn't help it a tear fell. Soon Alina was at my side. I turned to see a broken expression on her face, "Don't blame yourself for this, Alina."
"I know, I shouldn't. But I do."
I placed my hand on her shoulder, "If it's anyone's fault it's mine. Let's go."
