what's on your mind? (REVISED)

Lorraine eyes remain glued to the home pregnancy test she had taken last week 'just to be sure', because according to her doctor could very much be wrong.

She and Ed had given up on another child years ago, so the thought having another one out of the blue made her uneasy. It had been a whole week, and she still hadn't figure out how to tell Ed. Is there ever really a good time to tell your husband that you're nearing forty, but expecting a baby?

So distracted by her own mind, Lorraine didn't even notice her husband come behind

"Your hair looks pretty already, you sure you wanna brush it another 100 times?" She giggles as he as he rests his head on her shoulder. "I didn't even hear you get up." He mumbles against her neck, inhaling her vanilla scent. "Couldn't sleep, so figured I'd just get a head start on the day." She replies genuinely.

At least that wasn't a lie.

"What's going on in that mind of yours? You're makin' that face." He half jokes. Lorraine had seemed off to him for about a week. He wasn't going to pry; she'd tell him if she needed to. She always did. " Stop admiring and go wake our daughter up, Mr. Warren." she teased, still completely focused on putting her finishing touches.

"I can't even admire my queen. My, what this world has come to." Ed smiles picking her up bridal style as he carried her out the attached bathroom to their bedroom. "Ed!" Lorraine cries out, bursting into a fit of giggles. She ignores the nausea building up, focusing her attention of her husband. "I shall see you downstairs, fair lady." he calls out with the dopiest grin across his face. Lorraine rolls her eyes, following after him.

------------

"Gross!" Judy exclaims, covering her eyes at the sight of her parent's affection. "Seems to me someone wants to be included..." Lorraine approaches her daughter and begins smothering her dark brown hair with kisses. The little girl giggles, calling for backup. "Daddy!!" she yelps, proposing a truce.

"You walked right into that, pumpkin." He says as he picks her up and swings her.

After 30 minutes, Judy is off to school and the house is quiet again. Thankful for the serenity, Ed and Lorraine decide to take today as a lounge day and just watch movies. The atmosphere shifted from tranquility to complete and utter fatigue as Lorraine spirits towards the guest bathroom.

"Your doctor said that you should've been feeling better by now. I'm calling the office." Lorraine quickly gathers herself to stop her concerned husband. "No need. It could just be coming with vengeance on its last day." She persuades, taking the home phone away from Ed's hand.

"I'm going to go get you things for the grocery store, anything specific?" Ed asks, helping Lorraine stand. "I'm fine. I'm sure Judy would like more ice-cream; she ate the last of it yesterday. I'm just going to lie down."

All she wanted at that very moment was to be transparent; to tell the one person she tells everything to that it wasn't just that something is on her mind, someone is.

Instead of speaking her mind she lays lamely in her bed, allowing her thoughts to consume her until she falls asleep.

"Lorr?" Ed gently calls, startling the restless woman. "Hey, I didn't mean to scare you. So, I already started on dinner, I don't want you worrying about that. But how are you feelin'?" Ed kneels, giving medicine and vitamins to Lorraine. "I feel fine, not the greatest." he frowns when her smile barely reaches her eyes.

"Well, do you want me to just bring you dinner?" He asks, getting an immediate dismissal. A silent nod to Ed, indicating that she indeed was going to drag herself downstairs to eat with her family.

She trudges downstairs, gripping onto the rail. This baby was setting ground rules and was very clear that they did not care what Lorraine's opinions were.

Lorraine boredly picks through her plate, eating the smallest bites. She was frustrated, not with Ed, not with the baby, at herself.

She knew that she was so obviously digging herself into a deeper hole. The longer she sat and pondered about when to tell her family, the worse the timing would become. It wasn't like the timing was intentional anyhow. Being so mentally and physically drained from a case while carrying a child was the worst feeling Lorraine had ever felt. She was lonely but wanted to be alone, happy, but wanting to cry. It wasn't normal for her to be so unsure, she relied on the safety of always knowing and being put together.

Not knowing what path to take, what the next step is had Lorraine's mind going in circles. The anxiety of it all threatened to boil over all the time, and it was annoying. It felt like she was in her 20s all over again, sitting on the tile terrified to the death to receive the phone call from the doctor's office. Before she even knows what she's doing, she's excusing herself from the table to go to the living room.

She offers Ed a glass of wine and fills her with cranberry juice. She's done, she has to tell Ed. She wraps her arms around her husband as she allows the kiss to distract her fully.

"Nuh uh. I'm withholding any frisky, sexual activity until you can sit a whole thirty minutes without puking." Ed tuts.

She wishes she could make the joke she wanted to, but he doesn't know about the baby.

"Go to sleep, lady." He tucks her in, holding her tightly until she dozes off.

Her mission has obviously failed, but tomorrow is a new day. What's a pregnancy announcement after fighting the most dangerous inhumane entities anyways?
