You're Nothing Like Them

"I never realized how many clothes I had until I had to fit someone else's entire wardrobe into my closet," Camila noted as she pulled her boyfriend's clothes out of the boxes that scattered the bedroom and hung them up.

"Someday I'll build you the biggest most beautiful house with a giant closet big enough for all of our clothes and more," Shawn said sweetly as he leaned down and kissed Camila's cheek. She instantly felt herself blush.

"Well you don't have to do all that," she said shyly. "I was just gonna suggest we upgrade the dresser." Shawn smirked and took a step closer to his tiny girlfriend but his phone started ringing on the nightstand before he could get to her. He sighed and took a few strides to where his phone sat, answering as soon as he saw his best friend's name on the screen.

"What's up man?" he asked. Camila could tell by his tone alone that it was Brian on the other end of the call. Shawn was silent for a minute as he listened before speaking up again. "Tonight? I don't know — let me ask the Mrs." Camila snapped her head over at him and smiled at the nickname. It wasn't the first time he had referred to her as that but it still filled her heart with butterflies. "No," Shawn said with an eye roll. "We didn't elope in North Carolina. I promise I wouldn't keep that from you." Camila giggled as Shawn pulled his cell phone away from his ear. "Dinner at Brian & Bristol's house tonight?" He sighed when he saw his girlfriend's shoulders slouch. Usually she would be jumping at the opportunity to spend the evening hanging out with their best friends but ever since their little game of twenty questions in the car her and Bristol hadn't necessarily been on great terms — even if the blonde half of that friendship didn't realize it.

"I guess I have to talk to her eventually," she grumbled as she folded one of Shawn's t-shirts. "Sure. We'll be there."

"We'll be there," Shawn said into his phone. "What time? ... OK. Perfect — see you then, dude." He ended the call and plugged it back in before walking back to where is girlfriend sat on the floor and sat down next to her. "She's your best friend, baby," he said as he rubbed a hand over her back. "I hate seeing you have any anger for her in here." He poked her chest where her heart was.

"I can't just...pretend I don't know. I'm gonna have to bring it up with her."

"It's probably a good idea for you two to talk it out. I can distract Brian if you need me to." Camila nodded as she climbed into his lap and wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face against his chest as he held her.

"I hate fighting with her."

"Who says it has to be a fight?" he asked. "It's merely a misunderstanding. Wait...have you guys fought before?"

"In eighth grade," she sighed. "I had a major crush on this boy in my science class and she knew that but she still agreed to go to the spring dance with him...and they kissed." Shawn didn't say anything but she could see that he was trying to hold in a laugh. "Don't laugh! Fourteen year old Camila was devastated."

"My poor baby," he said with a playful pout. "But you've got me now! You didn't need that eighth grade science nerd." Camila chuckled and rolled her eyes.

As they day went on, Camila found herself getting more and more nervous to face her best friend. By the time they were pulling into the driveway of Brian and Bristol's house she was fairly certain she was cutting off all circulation to her boyfriend's hand as she squeezed it tightly in her own. The poor guy — he was clearly in pain but he also knew he was the only thing keeping his girlfriend composed so he suffered through the pain, despite knowing he'd probably have an imprint of her small hand on his when she finally let go. He put the car in park and heard her let out a deep exhale.

"Look at me," he said firmly as he unbuckled his seatbelt. She did as he asked only to be greeted with two large hands on either side of her face, squeezing her cheeks together before leaning in and kissing her hard. "I love you so much." He felt her start to become less tense with the kiss so he kissed her two more times for good measure before they both stepped out of the car and walked to the front door. Shawn texted Brian to let him know that they had arrived — avoiding knocking or ringing the doorbell in case Milo was napping.
