A couple of weeks had gone by. It was Saturday, April 26th, 1991. Melanie was at Ele's house to hang out before a party. Melanie had arrived two hours ago. Ele was doing her makeup as Melanie sat on her bed talking with her.
"Did you see the way Michael was staring at you yesterday? He's so in love with you," Ele said. "You really think so? I mean, I have a thing for him, but we can't just jump to conclusions," Melanie said. "I'm honestly not. It's quite obvious that he's infatuated with you," Ele said as she applied a bit of blush to her cheeks. "He's just being very nice. If he asks me out, he asks me out," Melanie said. "If you say so. Mel, I like the dress you're wearing, but that's more of a casual daytime dress. You need a casual dress that'll work as a party dress too," Ele said after applying lipgloss on her lips. "I think I look fine the way I am, Ele," she said. "Please. Just let me give you a makeover, Mel," the seventeen year old begged.
Melanie thought for a moment. She figured she could look and act like a popular girl just for one night.
"Oh, fine. But don't make me look like a clown," Melanie said. "I won't," Ele said before going to her closet and getting a thin strapped pale blue dress with a plaid pattern. "You want me to wear that," Melanie asked. "It's cute and casual. Plus, it would look great on you," Ele answered.

"That's cute and casual," Melanie asked. "Yep. Anyway, I'm sure Michael will find you hot in this if he actually shows up tonight," Ele replied. "Okay," Melanie said.
Ele then did a simple yet glittery makeup look that matched the dress she wanted Melanie to wear. After that, Melanie changed into the dress Ele wanted her to wear. About two hours later, guests had started arriving for the party. Some were Melanie's and Ele's Newsies costars while others were people Ele knew. It was around 10:00 pm when Melanie started loosening up and enjoying herself. She was talking to a couple of guys when Christian walked up to her.
"Christian! I didn't know you were coming," Melanie said with a smile as she took a sip of her drink. "Vic wanted me to come and see you and tell her how you looked. So I did. Plus, I was invited," he said. "Oh. What will you tell her," Melanie asked.
Christian thought for a moment before he spoke. He didn't want to offend Melanie and ruin his friendship with her and the sisters.
"I'll say I didn't know you since you look so grown up and not like yourself at all," Christian said truthfully while the boys walked away. "Oh," Melanie said as she began covering the top of her chest. "No, no. Don't cover up. There may be one or two boys here who haven't seen all of your, uh, charms. And I did promise Vic I would see you," Christian said while moving Melanie's hand.
