The golden autumn sun shone through the old glass windows of the library, casting a warm glow on the rows and rows of bookshelves. The room smelled of old paper and maple, filled with the sound of quiet voices and the girl's school uniform shoes clacking on the marble floor.

Chaewon clutched the leather cover of the book tighter, biting her lip in impatience as she made her way back to her friends. Running was forbidden in the library, and Chaewon knew better than to break the rules. After all, this was a prestigious school, and she wanted to stay out of trouble.

She spotted Heejin's golden hair in her vision and contained a squeak, hurrying over to the table her friends sat at.

"You found it?"

"I found it," Chaewon held the book tight against her chest, and Heejin looked like she was about to explode with excitement. Beside her, Hyunjin picked at her nails in boredom.

"Well come on!" Heejin practically pounced on her to take the book, pushing it flat against the table and eyeing it with wonder. "No way..."

The book was older and faded, but the title, The Ultimate Guide To Mythical Creatures was plain to see. Hyunjin crinkled her nose at it and went back to her own textbook, while Heejin and Chaewon practically squealed with delight.

"How? I mean I thought Madame Bae had restricted all the fantasy books..." Heejin said, running her hand down the cover.

"She forgot this one," Chaewon sat down next to her, ignoring Hyunjin's disgruntled sound and leaning in with Heejin. "What do you think is in it?"

"It says on the cover," Hyunjin snorted. "Don't you guys know that all that stuff is fake?"

"Shut up Hyunjin," The eldest glared at her. "You don't know for sure,"

"Yeah, cause ghouls and goblins existing is perfectly sound logic,"

"Will you stop it with the whole "logical" act? You're just too busy being all broody and mysterious to enjoy fantasy," Heejin shot back.

"This is so cool," Chaewon hummed thoughtfully, flipping through the pages. "Look! Mermaids! Those are my favorite,"

She watched as the illustrations seemed to shimmer on the page, women with tails that shone like silver and fangs like snakes.

"I thought harpies were your favorite," Heejin replied.

"I'd let a mermaid drown me," Chaewon sighed. "They're so pretty,"

"Gay,"

"Shut. Up. Hyunjin,"

"I like vampires," Heejin told them when they came across that page. Hyunjin's cheeks got a little pink.

"That's so basic," Chaewon wrinkled her nose, looking at the illustration of a man in a black cloak and a red bloodstain on his lips. "They aren't even scary,"

"Not the men," Heejin turned the page and revealed a woman with a similar look. "Look at how beautiful female vampires are,"

"Eh,"

"What do you mean, eh?" Heejin looked at Chaewon incredulously. "They're stunning. They say vampires can have children with humans and their children grow up to be just as beautiful as them. They're called halflings or something. It's like, my dream to meet one,"

"But don't vampires never age?" Chaewon asked.

"They stop aging when they're adults," Heejin explained, pointing to that part of the page.

"That's such a boring answer," Chaewon snorted. "You want to be seduced so bad,"

"And I'd happily let a vampire eat me if she's that pretty," Heejin said proudly.
