༄ chapter forty four
-ˋˏ KIT'S (AND VERA'S) REDEMPTION ˎˊ-
"IT was my understanding that your relationship with Lieutenant Pike was at a stand-still, as well was it my understanding that you and your siblings did not have a strong enough connection to warrant visits," Spock insisted, eager (though no one could tell it but Vera) to return to his people in as short a time period as possible.
Nearly a month after Cassius' hesitant signage of his agreement to relinquish all relation with his youngest son to Vera. Since then, the small found-family of three had been readily preparing for a trip to Vulcan to approve Vera's parentage from Nath's other culture. Those four weeks had been long and hard, with the mechanic alternating her time between working on the new and improved Enterprise alongside Scotty, learning Vulcan culture as to not embarrass herself in front of her son's people, and fulfilling her duties as Third-In-Command in taking care of her crew and herself.
Now, she, Nath, and Spock were to set off in a days time for New Vulcan. After a long period of decision, Vera urged herself to speak with Kit and her siblings beforehand. As sour as she still was towards her brother and sister for practically abandoning her once their mother died, and as stubborn she was to not admit her own wrongdoings in her fight with Kit, it had to be done. She refused to leave her home planet until it was.
Vera shook her head in response to her partner's urgings, understanding how desperate he was to see his father and Prime self, but also knowing what she had to do. "It'll only take a while, I'm sure," She replied softly, "I'll be back before dinnertime. In the meantime, do you mind terribly taking Nath to Leo and Chan's before heading off to your 'important meeting' with Jim?"
"Of course." He gave a ghost of a smile, which encouraged her to nod in response, heading to the kitchen to kiss Nath's head as he did math problems far beyond her own comprehension before leaving the apartment in pursuit of her first mission: Cas and Aera.
AERA and Cas' apartments were on the opposite end of Starfleet Headquarters to her own, farther away from their father than Vera was. During the six months between the mechanic reentering Starfleet and the mission against Khan, Vera had become no stranger to her older siblings homes, as Verenia encouraged the three the join her on 'family bonding nights' every week, the host house rotating between the four.
When Verenia passed and the youngest became estranged from her siblings, who, in part, found her to be of blame for their mothers death (a conclusion she hadn't the faintest how they came to), Vera ceased all visits to any buildings as far out as their own. As a result, navigating the far end of Headquarters only made the Second Officer feel more out of place and nervous for what was to come.
