It's been roughly three years since I saw Soph at that party. Even though its been years, I still think of her randomly. I might be happy in my relationship with Becs, but my mind still randomly wanders to the what could've been. I have to shake off the intrusive thoughts because without Becs, I wouldn't have Emma and she is the best thing to ever happen to me.

I shake off the thoughts of Sophia once again and continue with my day. Since I finished school, I'd gotten a job doing web design. It's been the best. I'm not home as often as I would like, but we have financial stability I wasn't sure I would ever be able to provide when we found out about Emma. It's been a huge relief.

Today, I had the day off and Emma and I were headed to the carnival. She had seen a commercial for it in town and hadn't stopped talking about it. I was surprising her with it. Her face when we pulled into the parking lot was priceless. She was literally bouncing in her seat as I unbuckled her.

We spent the whole day bouncing between the arcade games and the different rides. The favorite was the Ferris wheel. She forced me to go on it at least five times. By the end of the day, the ride operator had recognized us and just laughed as he saw her dragging me back onto the little seat. I couldn't help but laugh along with him as her little self was man handling me to get me on the ride. By the end of the day, she was exhausted and didn't fight me when I told her it was time to go home. She immediately passed out on the ride home. On the drive home, I was driving through an intersection, when I heard the blaring of a horn and then everything immediately turned to black. I came to for a second to find someone pulling me out of the car.

"Emma" I choked out

"Sir, we have someone with her. We are taking you both to the hospital."

I just nodded before everything turned to black again.

I woke up very confused in a dark hospital room. I pushed the nurse call button and waited for the nurse to come in. When the door opened, two women entered the room, one wearing a white coat, I assumed she was the doctor.

"Mr. Byrd, I'm Doctor Hale. How are you feeling?"

"Like I was hit by a truck. Where is Emma? What happened?"

"That's about how you should feel. You were in a pretty intense car crash. Fortunately, you had relatively minor injuries. You've suffered a serve concussion. It's why you're just waking up hours later. You also broke your leg in the crash. It's been set and casted. You'll be off of it for a few weeks. The Ortho will be here tomorrow to check on you and explain everything better. Unfortunately, your daughter injuries were extensive. She was taken into surgery to repair a liver laceration and stop internal bleeding. She lost a lot of blood during the accident and required a blood transfusion. It was touch and go for a second, due to her blood type. We had a very small supply of B negative blood and had to continue with O neg. She is stable now and her mother is with her. She might need another transfusion again, we had hoped that either you or her mother would be able to be donors, but neither of you are the correct blood type, so we will have to continue to give her donor o negative blood when the time comes."

"But she is stable and going to survive?" I asked unsteady having had a lot of information just thrown at me.

"Yes, she will pull through in no time. Kids are very resilient thank goodness."

I just nodded. "Can I go see her?"

" In the morning, the nurses can help get you to her room to see her."

"Thank you"

"No problem, Nurse Caroline, will be here if you need anything."

"Thank you"

As they both walked out of the room, I used the room phone, to call my parents.

My dad answered with a groggy hello.

"Dad, its Mark." My voice sounded a little strained

"Mark! Where are you calling from? Is everything ok?"

" Emma and I were in an accident. We're at Mass General now. I broke my leg and was concussed. Emma got the brunt of the damage and had to have surgery for internal bleeding. Apparently it her blood type caused a bit of a problem, but the doctor told me that she is stable now and I can go see her in the morning. Rebecca is with her now."

"Oh thank goodness! We will come check on you both in the morning. Get some sleep son"

"See you tomorrow, night"

With that we hung up and I immediately fell back asleep completely unaware of the shit show that was about to implode my life.

The next day my parents were waiting for me to wake up in my room.

"Morning guys" I said groggily.

My mom raced to my side. "How are you feeling?"

"Pretty shitty. My head hurts like a bitch."

"The nurse told us to have you page her when you woke and that she would administer pain medication and bring a wheel chair for you to go see Emma." Dad told me, while standing at the edge of my bed. I nodded and hit the page button. A minute later a new nurse appeared pushing an empty wheelchair. She put it next to the bed as she started recording my vitals.

"Hi Mr. Byrd. I'm Nurse Caroline. Your vitals are looking good. How is your pain level?" She asked

"My head feels like its about to burst and my leg definitely feels broken." I responded

"Ok no worries." She pulled out a syringe and inserted it into my IV. "This will help with all of that. It might make you drowsy, but you'll still be fine to go visit your daughter for a short time. She is just down the hall in the children's wing. We have no problem with your parents pushing you down there."

I nodded as she and my father helped me get into the chair. Both my parents had concerned looks on their faces as we walked down to Emma's room in silence. When we walked in, Emma and Rebecca were both asleep. It broke my heart to see them in here. I was thankful that at least Rebecca wasn't in the car with us and that Emma and I both are relatively unscathed. We stood there for a second before Rebecca woke and realized we were there.

"Oh hey!" She whispered, "How are you feeling? I came to check on you last night, but the nurses said you had gone to sleep already."

"I'm alright. More concerned about her." I nodded towards Emma.

"She is good. They gave her another transfusion late last night and said that its looking like she is out of the woods and wont need another. It doesn't help that she has a weird blood type. They were really concerned about it, which just added to my anxiety, since I was useless."

I nodded, "I can imagine."

"Mark mentioned it vaguely. What was wrong with Emma's blood transfusion?" My dad asked

" Emma is B negative and I'm O positive and Mark is type A. So neither of us could donate blood to her." Rebecca explained

Him and my mom shared a look before turning to me, "Do you want to wait for Emma to wake here or try to get some rest and come back later to see her?" Mom asked.

"I'll stay here for a while and see if she wakes up. I want to see here before I need more pain killers and a nap."

Mom patted my shoulder, "ok sweetheart. We are going to go get everyone coffee since it's a little crowded with all of us in this room."

"Ok thanks Mom" I responded as she walked out of the room.

Emma woke up groggy about an hour late. She was happy to see me, but still very much out of it and fell back asleep not too long after the nurse checked her out and then gave her more medicine for her pain. It was heartbreaking to see her like that, but the doctor assured us that she was out of the woods and would make a full recovery. I went back to my room shortly after she went back to sleep. My pain medication had worn off and my body was back to hating all things. I said goodbye to my parents, who looked more heartbroken than they did this morning, and went back to sleep.
