Sarah sat next to Melanie, who held an ice pack on Sarah's forehead. Sarah's eyes were closed, and aside from looking ghastly pale, Maya could see Sarah had a big cut on her forehead, which was surrounded by a forming bruise.

"Oh, my love. What happened?" Maya asked softly, her growing concern fuelling her trembling hands as she knelt in front of the chair her eldest sat in.

"I fainted," Sarah whispered, looking at Maya, her eyes blinking slowly.

Maya glanced at Melanie, who provided an explanation.

"We were running laps outside for gym class, and she just went down," Melanie explained, and Maya sighed in frustration.

"They shouldn't have you guys outside in this weather. It's unsafe," She insisted, shaking her head. There was a heatwave outside, for crying out loud. Who would make students run laps outside in the direct sun? Maya ought to give them a piece of her mind. They directly put every single kid in that class at risk for not only heat stroke, but fainting, which would lead to injuries like the cut that Sarah sported, which likely happened on the way down to the ground.

Focus. The teacher can be dealt with later. For now, Sarah is the priority.

Taking a deep breath, Maya looked at her daughter's friend, still sitting loyally by her side.

"How are you? Are you feeling okay?" Maya asked, and Melanie nodded, wiping her sweaty forehead with the back of her hand.

"I'm used to being in hot weather, the pool is often a warm environment. I'm just tired," she explained.

Maya handed Melanie some change. "Go buy yourself a gatorade and drink it. Don't overexert yourself, no matter what the gym teacher says. Listen to your body. If you feel dizzy, sit down," Maya reminded, and reached forward, putting her hand on Melanie's shoulder.

"Thank you for being such a good friend to Sarah. Carina and I really appreciate it," Maya added softly.

Melanie smiled and patted Maya's hand in appreciation, the grateful look on Melanie's face telling Maya that it was worth it.

Once Melanie left, Maya looked back at Sarah, who still looked eerily pale. She quickly formed a plan as she signed Sarah out, and instead of having her walk to the car, Maya just carried her. She helped Sarah buckle up, and before driving off, called Carina and handed Sarah the phone.

Fortunately, Carina answered on the first ring.

"I just got out of surgery and heard your message! What happened? Is Sarah okay?" She asked, voice full of panic.

"Mamma..." Sarah whimpered softly, her eyes closed, and Carina sighed in relief, hearing her daughter's voice.

"Oh, my poor bambina. What happened, amore mio?" Carina asked anxiously.

When Sarah didn't respond, Maya shook her shoulder to make sure she wasn't unconscious, and Sarah's eyes opened.

"She fainted in gym class. Their teacher made them run laps outside," Maya supplied, and Carina cursed loudly.

"Che idiota! We'll be emailing the school about this. Take a picture if she has injuries so we can document this, because that is beyond harmful behaviour, and we will not let it go. I'd say bring her here, but I have too many patients. We've had two traumas today and have a third incoming,"

"I'll do that as soon as I can. I can't afford to take more time off, so I'm taking her to the station. We can treat her like a walk in," Maya responded, dutifully turning onto the street they needed.
