Joe's POV

Wow, it wasn't a dream, I thought to myself as I woke up and saw Demi was still laying beside me.

I watched as she slept. She looked just how she did three years ago, peaceful. There were obvious things that were different about her. Her hair was longer, she had gained weight and looked more healthy, she had lighter hair now. She was still the most beautiful thing I had ever laid eyes on.

I carefully got out of bed so I didn't wake her. I wanted to make her breakfast for old time's sake. I made my way down her hallway and into her kitchen.

-

"Good morning," Demi's raspy voice said.

I looked up and saw her looking out of the kitchen window at me with a smile.

"Good morning," I said flipping the pancakes with a spatula.

"You didn't have to do all this," She said to me.

"I know but I wanted to," I replied handing her a mug with some coffee in it and looking around. "So what are all these boxes for?" I asked her.

She took a seat at her table and sipped on her coffee.

"I'm actually moving to New Mexico soon," She said.

I blinked in surprise.

"Really?" I asked.

She nodded her head.

"Why New Mexico?" I asked.

She sighed.

"Honestly, I thought it would be a nice change and a good way to work things out after this divorce. I also was born there and have a lot of family there," She said to me.

I nodded understandingly. I would hate to see her go, but who was I to stop this bird from spreading her wings and flying? If anyone deserved peace it was Demi.

"So," I said putting a plate down in front of each of us. "What are we doing today?" I asked her taking a sip of milk. "Or are you tired of me yet?" I asked licking the milk from my lips not breaking eye contact with her.

I watched as she looked away from me and bit her lip with a smile.

"You know I'm never tired of you," She said.

I smiled.

It was so amazing that no matter how much time we spent apart we could always get back around each other like we never left. I wasn't sure what my intentions were by spending this much time with her. All I knew was that Demi was a big distraction from all the shitty things going on in my life and definitely from missing Maddie. It was nice to feel like the old me for a while, even if I was pretending.

-

"What are you getting here?" Demi asked me as we pulled up at the liquor store.

"It's a surprise," I told her.

I quickly went in and purchased a bottle of gin. I went back out to the car and popped it open with her.

"For old times sake," I said cracking open the bottle of Bombay and taking a huge sip.

I held the bottle out for Demi to take a shot as well.

"Drink?" I asked her.

She stared for a moment unsure if she wanted to drink it or not.

"Fuck it," she said taking the bottle. "tis the season," She said taking a huge gulp.

I chuckled at her as she made a face.

"Ugh, I can't believe you're drinking before noon," She said to me in disgusts as she washed the drink down with a bottle of water.

"Well, besides you, you know old Bombay will never let me down," I said holding the bottle up before taking another drink. "Some things never change," I told her.

Yes, I was referring to my alcoholism, but I was also referring to my relationship with Demi. The bond we had was something special. I had yet to experience this with someone else.

"What does Sophie think about that?" Demi asked me.

I sighed as I put the bottle down and stared ahead.

"Honestly, I stopped drinking for the past couple years. I really only picked it back up after I got bailed out of jail. I stopped ever since we found out Maddie was coming but lately I've started to pick it back up," I admitted. "I'm not proud that I'm spiraling again but what can I do?" I said.

"I'm sorry," Demi said giving me apologetic eyes. "You know I won't judge you Joe. We all do things at low points," she said looking down.

"We sure do. Thanks for never judging me," I said to her with a smile.

She didn't know it, but she was helping me in more ways than she knew.
