Chapter 31; Rescue Me

                                    

                                          
Before leaving Mystic Falls and Whitmore, Enzo and Malia had to go to the Forbes residence to pick up the kids. Liz had to work, being the sheriff and all that, and Mali misses her babies. Enzo had a freak out moment but he is now holding Tobin, who keeps staring at him with his big, Damon-blue eyes. 
                          
"Sloan!" Malia smiles as she answers the phone. 
                          
"Have you located the doppelgänger?" Sloan asks Malia, getting straight to the point. The fact that she can get straight to the point like that is personally what Malia likes about Sloan. 
                          
"You told us to find a nameless paramedic at the scene of a car accident in a city of freeways, fried green tomatoes, and horrid drivers," Malia says. "That's not as easy as it sounds, especially joy when you have two kids. A one year old and a three month old." 
                          
"That's why I'm calling," Sloan says, smiling faintly at the fact Malia has children. "The doppelgänger's name is Tom Avery. And I just saw him deliver a patient to Atlanta Metropolitan Hospital and remember, if you fail at killing Tom Avery, Stefan will be having a back alley lobotomy." 
                          
"Honey, please!" Malia purrs and Enzo glances at her as Tobin gnaws on his finger, he is teething. "I already triggered my curse. I won't fail. Harm one hair on my daughter's father's head and you're gonna see how dangerous a Roerk hybrid can be," she says before hanging up. 
                          
"Damn, gorgeous," Enzo breathes. "Is it me or did the temperature raise a hundred degrees? You're even hotter when you're mad." 
                          
"Isn't that why you like me?" Malia asks teasingly as she gives Lilly some fruit parfait yogurt that she just ordered for her. "Thank you!"
                          
"Your kids are adorable," the waitress beams.
                          
"Thank you!" Malia says with a smile. "My husband and I have to go the donation route because he can't conceive."
                          
"Don't worry," the woman says. "My husband and I are in the same boat. I just found I'm pregnant with out third."
                          
"Wow," Malia smiles. "Congratulations." 
                          
"You're creepy," Enzo says as soon as the waitress walks away. "You go from cold and mad to chirpy and happy. It's creepy as hell." 
                          
"I know," Malia replies.

Malia signs in at the front desk of the hospital with a double baby sling, holding both Tobin and Lilly. She walks over to where Enzo is.
                          
"The receptionist doesn't know Tom personally so I... convinced him to call someone who does," Malia says. 
                          
Enzo looks at her low cut top and he just guesses. "You naughty girl," he teaches as he gets Lilly from the back baby sling and holds her on his lap. Enzo picks up a magazine and he opens it up. "Ahh. Mordern women. All bosom, no mystery. But not you." He looks at her. "You're a mystery. Tell me, Malia. Why are you with me when no one else knows?"
                          
"Because I like you, and I want you to prove yourself to them first," Malia says. "And then the whole world will know. I will send a magical telegram to the major news posts if I have to."
                          
"You're dramatic and I adore it," Enzo admits. "I knew you were gonna be different from the moment you teleported into that classroom and shook my hand, gorgeous. It's why I got your number."
                          
"I listened to your story, the witch spirits like to help me hear things when I'm not close," Malia says. "I just had to meet you." 
                          
"You were asking about Tom Avery?" A doctor asks as he walks over. 
                          
"Yes, sir," Malia replies as she stands up, securing the back of Tobin's head inside the sling while Enzo puts Lilly back in hers. "We need to see him as soon as possible. It is a matter of life and death."
                          
"I wish I could help," the doctor claims. "Tom Avery was a pain in my ass, but he was also the best paramedic I ever met."
                          
"What do you mean, was?" Enzo asks. 
                          
"He disappeared four months ago," the doctor says. "No one knows where he is."

Enzo and Malia find an old, beaten down house. It's an address that Sloan found, Stefan texted it to Mali. Caroline is still there to make sure that Stefan doesn't lose his memory again. Tobin and Lilly are sleeping in the slings, having ate. 
                          
"It's a miracle we found this place," Enzo says. "Every other street in this blasted city is Peachtree." 
                          
"These look old," Malia says. "Four months old, maybe." 
                          
Enzo tugs on the door handle to see if the door is unlocked. But it isn't. Malia uses her magic to sent the door bursting open and Enzo glances at her. 
                          
"That's her, the red hair gives her away," Malia says. "She's a witch." She holds her hand up to the door and she sighs. "She has a protection spell up. I could get in, but..." Malia uses her magic to snap the witch's neck, surprising Enzo. "We need you, too. So..."
                          
"You're bloody crazy," Enzo murmurs as they enter the house. 
                          
The witch's body is lain in the floor, her eyes wide open. Malia kneels and closes her eyes. Malia had seen the trance she was in. She was in the middle of a spell. There was no way the mystery witch would be up to answering questions.
                          
Enzo hears a heartbeat. "Focus those werewolf ears and listen. Do you hear what I hear, love?"
                          
Malia focuses and she nods. "I hear a frown human's heartbeat." 
                          
Enzo and Malia follow the sound to hear basement. They find Tom Avery in some kind of coma. Tom wakes up in a panic. Malia makes Enzo take the kids and she knees in front of Tom. With a single touch, he calms down and smiles in awe.
                          
"I'm sorry," Malia whispers before she snaps his neck. "I have to save my daughter's father." 
                          
Enzo gazes at Malia and he smiles in awe. He was doing to do it for a girl named Maggie but he's not even thinking about her right now. All Enzo can think about is getting Malia to a bed while leaving the kids with Damon, Stefan, Liz, or bloody Caroline.

Malia, her kids, and Enzo get a motel room in Atlanta after calling Sloan and telling him Tom is dead. Caroline is staying with Stefan to be sure he's A-ok.
                          
Right now, Malenzo is laying in the single bed in the motel room, Tobin and Lilly are sleeping in between them. This isn't exactly what Enzo had in mind when he wanted to get a room with her but it's perfectly fine. He already adores both babies. Tobin and Lilly Maxwell both have a spot in Enzo's undead, uh beating heart, as does their mother.
