They sat down and started stretching.
"It feels like it, oddly," Ben said.
"So, Indi, how old are you?" Josh asked.
"Sixteen. You two?"
Ben smiled. "I'm sixteen, too."
"Eighteen," Josh said.
"Wow." Before I could say anything else, everyone was being told to line up. "Break a leg, guys," I said, getting up.
"You too," they replied.
Everyone trying out stood in a line, awaiting further instructions.
Christopher Gattelli came out of one of the doors, clipboards in hand. "Welcome and congratulations everyone! You are the lucky few who have received the callback. Now, what we will be doing, is girls are going to be put in a group and guys in the other. We will have ten at a time, and today you will be going over some of the choreography from Newsies that you were asked to learn. We are going to focus on small bits of King of New York and Seize The Day. Then tomorrow, I want you to do your own thing. Because, tomorrow, we will be dismissing people.
"As you all may know, we are still casting some lead roles, such as Racetrack and a few others. For you ladies, there is a new part being added to the show, which we have nicknamed our 'girlsie'. If you get the part of the girlsie, you will know her name and all about her. Now, girls and guys separate into your groups and we'll have ladies first."
Everyone split up and grabbed their belongings. The guys were escorted out one way and the girls who were not picked by their numbers were escorted out of the room to wait for their group. I was number twelve so I would be with the second group of girls. I was grateful that I was with the second group that way could get my nerves under control.
Soon after, it came my group's turn. I took a deep breath as I walked in with the other nine girls. We all got into our places. "We are going to do Seize The Day first. Positions, please. And on my cue, start."
We started, and I did my best. I went full out, holding nothing back. It ended pretty quickly which I was disappointed by. Then came King Of New York. We all ran to our bags and grabbed our tap shoes. On his cue once again, we started King Of New York. That went by in a flash, too.
"Thank you all. That was wonderful. You are free to go for the day. We will see you all tomorrow!" Christopher said.
I grabbed my things, got ready, and left. I saw Annabeth as I left but she didn't see me. I hoped she would do well.
I was shocked to see my parents waiting in the foyer of the building.
"So, how did it go?" Mom asked.
"It went great. I met two super nice guys and I got through the routines with no mistakes. Tomorrow they're going to start cutting people. We have to do our own routines then so, yeah. I'm nervous and in need of coffee. Can I get some?"
"You can get whatever you like. We're so proud of you, India." My dad hugged me.
"Thank you so much!"
We left the building and found the nearest coffee shop. I walked in as my parents went to the shop beside it since they didn't care for this particular coffee shop chain's drinks. I walked in, ordered my caramel macchiato, and waited.
"Indi?"
I turned and saw Ben and Josh. "Oh my gosh!" I exclaimed.
"What are you doing here?" Ben asked, smiling.
"Coffee, of course," I teased. "How did you get out so quickly?"
"As soon as they took the guy group out they started us on the routines. We were the first group." Josh said.
"I was second. Man, this must be fate or something," I joked. They both laughed.
"Do you want to sit with us? I mean, I know we're practically strangers and we know practically nothing about one another, but maybe we can hang out during this time." Ben said.
"Yeah, I'd like to make some friends while I'm here." Josh agreed.
I could tell there was something trustworthy about the two of them. I would be fine. "Sure. I'd like to make some friends, too."
The boys ordered their coffee and we sat down together, getting to know more about each other.
"So, Indi, where are you from?" asked Josh.
"Virginia. How about you two?"
"I'm from Virginia, too! Partly. I moved to New York for acting opportunities." Ben said.
"Wow, really? What a small world!" I said.
"I'm from Massachusetts," Josh said.
"Where are you going to school?" Ben asked.
"I've actually graduated. I'm homeschooled, well, was homeschooled. You two?"
"Wow. I graduated recently." Josh said.
"I'm still in. If I get a part though, I'll do it by correspondence."
We sat and talked for a good while longer. My parents walked into the coffee shop, seeing me and they looked worried.
"India, what are you doing?" Mom asked. Dad looked worried and mad at the same time.
"Oh! Sorry. Mom, Dad, this is Ben and Josh. We all met at the callback. Ben, Josh, this is my parents."
Mom and Dad looked a little relieved. They all greeted each other.
"It's time to go." Mom politely said.
I looked at the guys. "See you guys tomorrow. It was so nice to meet you two."
"Yep!" Josh said.
"It was nice to meet you too, Indi. Break a leg tomorrow if we don't see you!" Ben said.
"You too!"
We left out the door. I was waiting for a stern talking to, but none came. The rest of the day I worked on doing a routine. I was going to do my best. I wanted that part so badly.
I was going to be a Newsie.
