"What." Natalie hisses, rushing over to Kit.
"The news is covering it live. She kinda sorta.... Destroyed the market...." I feel my heart plummet to my feet.
"She's on her way here now. I don't know how she knows our location, but we have to leave. Now." Zo says, appearing behind Kit. "We can't gather or teleport a whole rebellion that quickly. How long would you say we have?" Nat asks her. "My guess? About-" I hear the sound of metal and concrete getting ripped away. Moments later, a loud crash echoes through the building.
"I'd say about a minute."
We all share the same look. We have to fight. We don't have a choice. Nat groans. "Have your weapons prepared. This should be real fun."The fourteen of us (Ez and Axl showed up along the way) stumble outside. Hade draws one of their revolvers out of their holsters. I hear the familiar sound of multiple sharp objects materializing. Lane knocks her bow. My hammer appears in my hand. "It's been awhile." I laugh to myself.
"Uh... you know you can make those look like normal weapons, right?" I hear Damien and Hade ask at the same time.
We all turn and stare at them in confusion. Damien lets go of his metallic frisbees. They vanish. Hade's gun disappears as well. "No." Nat mumbles.
"We didn't."
Nat is the first to try it. Her twin daggers become sleek and black, with intricate blue hilts. Caleb and Maxine follow suit, their swords forming in their hands. Within seconds, almost everyone has their weapons solidified.
I'm the only one without.
And we are out of time.Anai is alone, her long wild red hair out of its usual updo. Her face is stained with black streaks, her unsettling eye resting on our little group. "Thirteen of you and one of me...."
She throws her head back, cackling like a mad woman.
"Whatever is a girl to do?"
I watch Lane's blue eyes rest on a old apartment building. "DJ, is that thing abandoned?" She whispers to me. "I think so. What are you... oh no." Her bow dematerializes.
She raises both of her arms. The building begins to shake. Then, she jerks them to the left. And takes the top half of the building with her.
It topples downward, right onto Anai.
For a moment, everything is still. We're all in shock.
"Did you just take her out?" I finally whisper. "I think so." Lane croaks. We look around at each other in disbelief.
Then,
We cheer.
But our excitement only lasts for a moment. The rubble shifts. Hunks of concrete go flying.
"Oh fuck." Hade mutters. Anai rises out of the rubble, dusting herself off as if a whole ass building falling on her was nothing.
"Rude."
My heart pounds in my ears. Of course that wouldn't take her out.
"Lanette, is that how you treat guests?" with a swipe of her hand, Anai sends Lane (and me) spiraling into a wall. I slam into the wall. Lane slams into me. I hear a crack, followed by a sharp pain. "Fuck... that was rib..." I groan. Lane doesn't respond. "Darlin?"
No response.
"Lane."
Still no response.
"Lanette Parker!"
With one hand on my ribs, I drag Lane into my lap.
Oh thank creation, she's just unconscious. She groans, slowly opening her blue eyes. "You good?" "I think I broke a rib." I wheeze, leaning back onto the wall. I glance back at the rest of the group.
They're already fighting.
And losing.
"Lemme see." Lane mutters, tugging my shirt up. She winces. I feel her cold hand rest on my side. I gasp softly. "Hold still, dimwit." She says. I feel a flare of warmth. The pain dulls. "Best I can do." She mumbles before slumping against my chest. "It works." I chuckle. I glance back at the fight in a daze.
But the 6'5 projectile snaps me out of it.
Hade slams into the wall next to Lane and I, groaning.
"Did she fucking throw you?"
"Shaddup Murphy." They hiss.
I stare around the street. There's only three people left standing.
Anai, Damien, and Caleb, who's trying to protect his little brother.
"Well well well... All that's left is Darkness, Light, and an idiot." Anai cackles. Caleb's grip on his claymore tightens. "I'd back off if I were you, red." "There's no way in Hell." Caleb snarls. Anaideia shrugs. "Your mistake."
I watch a black circle surround the three of them. A strange berrier rises, trapping the brothers inside. Anai sends Caleb into the side with a flick of her wrist. "I'll deal with you later, you stubborn bastard." She turns her sights on Damien, a long black sword appearing in her hand. "I am sorry about this. Well... not really."
She backs Damien against the wall, raising her sword to strike.
But then Damien grins. But it's not his grin. "Surprise."
By the time Anai swings at Damien, it's no longer Damien. It's Caleb she's attacking.
And that himbo blocks her
By grabbing the sharp edge of the sword with both hands and trying his best not to get slashed across the face.
He shoves her away, staring at his bleeding palms.
"Ok maybe she was right about the idiot bit." I hear him wince.
"YOU ABSOLUTE..." Anai makes a series of very annoyed noises mixed with foul language. "I can't believe you actually fell for that." Caleb says with a strained laugh. Anai huffs, raising her sword. "Fine. I guess I'll have to deal with you now."
She raises Caleb against the barrier, leaving him to struggle in her one handed grasp. She raises her sword with the free hand, poising it to strike.
I squeeze my eyes shut. I don't wanna watch this.
There's a flash of white followed by laughter.
Oh no.
Oh god no.
I open one eye.
Damien stands in front of his brother, arms stretched wide, skewered through the chest by Anai's sword. "I was wondering when you'd come to his rescue." She tosses Caleb unceremoniously to the side, twisting the sword in Damiens chest as she does so. She yanks it out. Damien crumbles onto his knees.
But Anai isn't done.
