It almost feels like yesterday, Hinata thought to himself. When he and Oikawa became friends, when they became brothers, when he saw the world in a new light and when he finally found a soft haven for himself.
In that haven he could finally breath and take a moment to relax, tell Oikawa about his day and his worries. The slightly older neighbor of him, who knew words that could soothe him, the neighbor who would treat him milk bread and pork buns, the brother he had that would treat him ice cream at summer, who would tell him stories in winter, who would peel off the broiled skin of roasted sweet potatoes in fall and the one who he would view the thousand falling cherry blossoms with.
Oikawa Tooru, the friend that he deeply admires, his teacher, his brother and his ally. They were undefeated at snow ball fights especially, with the addition of Iwaizumi. But more than anyone else in this world he is the happiest with Oikawa.
Like the sun that had melted his worries away, the light that thoroughly guides him, the star that lulls him to sleep on those sleepless nights, the person who showed him the wide array of life.
Oikawa Tooru to him would always be akin to the sun, light and airy and he is always free. The loud spam of the volleyball at the wooden floors, the whistling winds that passes through those auburn locks and that goofy smile that he knew so well.
Everything and anything in Hinata's eyes seem to sparkle when Oikawa was with him, even the harshest storms were the calmest when Oikawa held his hands as they make their way home, and even in the darkest moments of his life he felt safe at Oikawa's warm embrace.
They were brothers in arms, they were best friends. Hinata knew Oikawa's dreams, fears, likes and even the dislikes.
They knew each other better than anyone else.
Until, they reached the next chapter of their life that is.
At the spring of his youth, Hinata realized he fell in love. Feelings, unknown sensations blossomed at his heart. Making it hard to breath, the loud clammoring of his uncontainable heart, the tightening feeling at his chest, and the fear to be hated. The longing to be together.
However, they were 2 years apart in age. Oikawa grew enormously popular, girls chased for him giving him handmade lunches, chocolates in valentines, umbrellas when it rains, towels after practice. Hinata knew he no longer had a space in Oikawa's life.
They drifted apart, the time they had together shortened and he began making some distance between them.
For that was the right decision, Oikawa after all was a bright light that had drawn others. Girls confessed to him like it was a normal thing, letters flooded at his locker like a tradition and then his beauty was no longer just his to be seen.
He could only gaze from a far, then they would talk at some family dinners, play at weekends when Oikawa was free from his other friends. That.... That was enough for him.
Until that event happened indeed.
It was a role play that involved majority of the students. Oikawa was the star of that show and Hinata was just a villager A. A commoner at that story.
Oikawa was the prince who brought victory back to his kingdom, saved a princess and he lived a life of praises and flooding attention. While Hinata is the villager who cheered the hero as he lead a parade of soldiers with his loving partner.
Perhaps it was jealousy that made Hinata's brain drift off, as when he was playing that role he tripped on one of the props. Making one of the props fall onto the ground. The statue of the great hero that marked the end of the story.
Fellow actors scowled at him, the audience became unease and Hinata trembled at his spot. As he wallow up in shame, guilt and self blame.
Then a hand reached out to him. Oikawa who was looking so tenderly at him, a confident smile on those lips as the backdrop made him appear like the hero that he is.
Hinata took that hand as he stood up with Oikawa's help. Then Oikawa bursted into a heroic laugh as he stood up fluttering his cape and he posed proudly.
"Nyahaha! I suppose that this villager can easily topple such statue, what a remarkable strength!" Oikawa played along as he playfully wink at Hinata.
The audience whispering in wonder, oh how the play had played.
"I suppose no statue can truly show the might of me your great hero! I thank you humble villager, for showing us this message." Oikawa remarked and the narrator played along as well.
'The great hero and the other villages learned, that greatness couldn't be contained by mere statues and such for greatness can only be seen in skin!'
The curtains soon fell and the crowd cheered.
Oikawa kneeled to Hinata who withdrew himself at the backstage. Sticking a band aid at Hinata's wounded knee.
Hinata's eyes teared up, "I'm sorry for ruining the play.."
Oikawa hugged him as the older boy played with his hair, "Don't worry... Its all fine. Plus, we added a nice lace to the end..."
Hinata soon stopped crying and Oikawa pulled him up.
"Now, let's apologize to the others."
Hinata nodded and the other staff let him off with that. Others saying that it still went great at the end. And the day ended well.
Hinata felt his heart almost burst, at the overflowing emotions that made its way to him.
He smiled softly, maybe they get to spend more time together from now on.
