ACT THREE!
(SAILOR MOON )
At the sound of a buzzer, two pencils hit the surface of the table at the same time, gaining looks from surrounding customers.
"We finished together that time." Kayin said.
"You're improving," Yume gave her a teasing smile. "Remember when you couldn't even beat the timer?"
Kayin took a sip of her strawberry milkshake. With a roll of her eyes, she responded. "Very funny."
After a long day of school and with the result of a cancelled skating practice, Yume had agreed to Kayin's suggestion of studying at her favorite cafe downtown for the upcoming maths exam.
Much to her liking, Kayin was ecstatic that she had been able to hang out with Yume more. There was something about the girl that drew her to her. And there was something in her that wanted to be friends with her—more badly than she ever felt with anyone else.
And thank goodness, it wasn't a challenge. She thought she'd ruin her chances the first day they had met. Yet, Yume didn't seem hesitant on accepting her offer—which Kayin opted to read as a step in the right direction.
Yume slightly laughed, taking a sip of her own banana milkshake. She looked back across the table to Kayin with the same teasing smirk. "What? It's true."
Kayin slumped a bit in her seat, the plastic of the booth squeaked. "How are you better at maths than me? You just got here!"
She lightly nudged her foot with her own under the table. "Chill, you big baby. I just got lucky with this unit." Yume said, tapping her study guide with the eraser-part of her pencil. "I usually suck at maths."
Admittedly, Yume's small gesture sent a shock through Kayin's body which left her beating a bit faster than usual. With little time to comprehend it, she decided not to respond in case her mind had her say something that'll embarrass her. And the last person she wanted to be embarrassed in front of was Yume.
Wordlessly, she straightened and picked up her pencil again. She could feel Yume's eyes on her, but when she looked up, her expression was unreadable. Though, her eyes swam with something that was too far for Kayin to make out.
After a few more seconds, Kayin started, "Um, should we go on to the next problem?"
That seemed to bring her out of her head.
She blinked. "Yeah, sure."
Kayin simply nodded, moving to reset the timer on her phone back to two minutes and thirty seconds. After completing it, she saw that Yume's gaze averted to the large window they sat next to. Kayin followed and it landed on a girl walking past. She had long, black hair and a school uniform of grays. It had to be to one of those private schools, she thought.
