34 | THE PRICE OF POWER

Start from the beginning

Iris heard the cheers from the Great Hall and felt disgusted. She didn't understand how anyone could possibly celebrate when Oliver was dead. How could they go on when her world had ended? Tiny sparks shot violently off of her body and when she glanced up at the faces of the group that had come outside, she could see the dark figure of the woman making her way inside with them.

The doors to the chamber right off the Great Hall swung open without anyone having to touch them. Iris dragged her brother's body beside Remus and accidentally tripped over her feet. She fell on the ground and started sobbing softly, the ground beneath their feet shaking.

"Give us a moment." Harry said to the others. Ron kept his arm around the crying Ginny and led her out of the Great Hall while the others followed. Veles stayed behind, but didn't speak. Harry stood silently in front of Iris.

After five minutes of drawn out silence, Iris stopped crying and spoke.

"I opened it." She said. "After he died, I opened it. Rhea's inside and she's gone, so . . . you can tell everybody that."

"Okay." Harry said. "Where will you be?"

Iris reached into her pocket and pulled out the photo of Teddy Lupin. She flashed it to Harry and turned around. He stared into her black eyes.

"I'll find you after." Harry promised.

Iris walked past Harry, Veles following silently behind her, and past the Great Hall. The few people that were lined up outside clapped for her but she didn't look at them.

The woman in black walked in tandem alongside her as she exited the castle, away from the people celebrating and the families reuniting.

"What do you want?" Iris asked suddenly, startling Veles. He glanced around wondering if she was talking to him but he saw that her head was turned in the opposite direction. "What do you want, Morgana?"

Morgana didn't respond.

"Just go away." Iris snapped at her.

"The first time I opened the Vale was after the death of my first born son at the hands of another witch." Morgana said. Iris stopped walking and looked at her. "You wondered what it would cost you . . . it costs everything. This is the price we have to pay for power."

"I DIDN'T ASK FOR THIS!" Iris screamed at Morgana. She waved her hand off when green fire appeared in her palm.

"Uh . . . Iris?" Veles said, wondering who she was talking to.

"What happened to my hands?" Iris demanded, holding up her pitch black fingers. She looked down at Morgana's and saw that hers were the same. "Dumbledore had this happen to him before he died. He was dying then. Am I dying too?"

"No." Morgana said. "It's a side effect of opening the Vale. There are a few. You have to understand, Iris, that you're different now. Your power is different now. It's unstable."

"How do I control it?" Iris asked through gritted teeth.

"It will take time. Years, maybe." Morgana said.

"Will you teach me?"

"I'm dead, Iris. The only reason I'm here is because you summoned me." Morgana said. Iris frowned, annoyed. "You will have to teach yourself."

Morgana vanished because Iris didn't feel like talking to her anymore. Every effort to do so felt as though she was widening the gaping hole that was inside of her. Every movement pierced her like a physical wound.

Veles didn't say anything.

Iris turned into a dragon and took Veles in her clawed paw. She flapped her wings into the air and flew through the sky. All she wanted to do was put as much distance between herself and Hogwarts as she could.
