I woke up and within a second i felt my head hurting really bad. Then i realised i was tied up to a chair and there was a black cloth over my head, blocking my vision. I groaned loudly as i positioned myself into the chair.
I felt the cloth being snatched from my head and i slowly started looking aroud me. I was in something like a warehouse. My vision was blurry and all i could see were a couple dark figures in front
of me. It took me a couple of second to gain my vision back but when i raised my head i saw him. Rio. He was standing right in front me, not saying a word, just studying me with his dark brown eyes. His features gave out a cold expression and he slowly opened his mouth to say something."Look at what the cat has dragged in." he finally spoke. His voice was deep and husky and by his tone, he sounded almost annoyed but i could see the slight smile forming in his lips.
"What's your name, sweetheart?" he asked.
I kept silent for a couple of seconds, looked him dead in the eye and finally spoke.
"Jane." i made a short pause and spoke again. "Jane Blake."
Rio looked at one of his guys who nodded and started dialing a number as he was walking away from us. After a couple of minutes the guy called Rio and they exchanged a couple of words, before the leader came back.
"And what do you want from us, Jane?" he asked while looking straight into my eyes.
I was aware they probably did a background check on me but that was already taken care of. What his boy told him was what he was gonna hear from me.
"I want a job." i lowered my head and quietly continued under my breath. "And a family."
I know these gangs consider themselves family, they care and look out for each other. I knew it wasn't gonna be easy to become a part of that, but considering my "past", it was supposed to work. I just had to be patient and give it some time.
"Interesting." Rio said. "Why don't you look something up on Craiglist or sum?" he asked taunting me.
"Your life..." i started slowly. "This life... it's all i know."
"Oh darling, you dont know a thing about my life." he said.
I looked up back at him and spoke again.
"You know, maybe i don't. But i do know one thing. I lost everything. I lost the only family i had left. I lost the people who raised me and who thaught me everything i know. And what i know is this life. The streets, the drugs, the guns, the money. I may not know your life but you surely dont know a thing about mine." i spat out angrily.
A part of what i said wasn't a lie. I did lose a lot of people. I did know this life and i was a part of it when i was a kid. But after it took my brother, i knew i had to change. I wanted to do something with my life, i wanted to be the good guy in the tale. My mom really died in a car accident, this also wasn't a lie. But it was many years ago. That's when i joined interpol but that's a story for another time.
Rio realised he might have misjudged me and kept quiet for a second. After that, he motioned to the guy behind me to untie me.
"Fair enough. Follow me." he said and i started walking behind him.
We exited the warehouse and got to a black cadillac. It was almost dark outside, so i must have been unconscious for a good couple hours. He opened the door for me and quickly got to the driver's seat.
"Belt." he said looking at me while putting the shift in reverse.
I was surprisingly calm, considering the situation. I was wondering where we were going but i wasn't gonna give him the pleasure of asking so i kept quiet during the ride.
After about 20 minutes he stopped in the parking lot of what seemed to be a cheap diner. He got out of the car and i followed him. We sat down and a waitress instantly came along with menus.
"Can i get you anything to drink?" she asked politely.
"Just coffee. Black." i said quietly.
"Same for me. Thank you." Rio said as the girl walked away.
She quickly came back with both our coffees and asked if we were ready to order.
"I'll have the chicken tenders aand..." Rio said and kept looking through the menu. "And a side of cheesy fries." he said while handing back the menu to the waitress.
"I'm good, thank you." i smiled at her and she walked away.
After a couple of minutes of Rio eating his food without saying a word, i finally broke the silence.
"What are we doing here?" i asked.
"I can't negotiate on an empty stomach." he replied while still chewing on his food.
I looked at him wondering who the hell this guy is because he surely wasn't that Johnny my roommates had told me so much about.
"I don't even know your name." i spoke while looking right into his deep brown eyes.
"Rio." he said and looked back down at his meal.
Soon enough he finished eating and apparently the negotiations started.
"Look darling, i don't know what you expect from me but i don't think i have a job for you."
Something in me trembled for a second at the way he called me darling. No no no, what the hell am i thinking? I'm here to put this mf in prison. I mean, yeah, he was undeniably hot, but i'm not here for this.
I snapped out of my thoughts and looked at him almost like i was begging him.
"I will take anything. Please. I really need it." i said as i almost broke down in tears.
He looked at me for a second, leaned back in his seat and looked outside. He looked like he was thinking, calculating the risk of accepting me into his family. After another couple of minutes of silence, he spoke.
"Okay. I might have something for you. But when i need you, you have to be there when i say you have to be there. Comprende?" he asked almost rhetorically.
I nodded showing him i understand. He stood up and i followed him to his car. While he was driving he handed me his phone.
"What am i supposed to do with this?" i asked visibly confused.
"Put your number in it, how else am i supposed to reach you?" he said not looking away from the road.
"I dont know, kidnap me?" i said and let out a humourless chuckle.
After a couple of minutes we were in a familiar area and i realised that's where they took me from. He stopped right behind my car and handed me my keys. I walked out of his car without saying a word and shut the door. He drove away and i finally felt relieved.
