Bonus Chapter: Fearful

                                    

                                          
(So this will sort of be similar to giving up, but it will be slightly different.)
                          
Summer wakes up to the sun shining in her face. She tries to look over to where Tai is, but finds he's not there. Summer gets up and gets ready for the day before going downstairs. There she finds her family happily eating breakfast. "Morning mommy." Ruby says happily eating. "Good morning sweetie. Did he make the breakfast this morning?" Summer asks putting a bit of venom into the word he. Tai nods in response and Summer sits down and starts eating. As she keeps eating she realizes the food actually tastes pretty good. Yet for some reason... she can feel the emotions the food was made with. The food tastes like it has a bit of love to it, but the love is mostly overwhelmed by fear. Yet despite that it's that small bit of love that Summer tastes that makes the food taste good. You see, earlier when Summer asked if he had made the food she was referring to her son (Y/N). For nearly two years now she, her husband, and their daughters had been abusing him every day. Every once in a while he would get fed, but it's just more than enough to keep him alive. As Summer continues to eat, she can't help but think about the small bit of love she tastes. Summer starts to think and has a realization. Though for two years they had done nothing but abuse him, (Y/N) had continued to see them as his family and loved them. Now though, the love is mostly gone and is just replaced with fear. As Summer thinks about this tears start to form in her eyes. She thinks about everything she's done to her son and how all of this was her idea to begin with. She starts full on crying and Tai rushes to her side asking if she's okay. Summer just continues to cry though as she plays through her memories of the abuse she's put her son through like a home video recording. She finally notices the expressions on (Y/N)'s face and sees them for what they are. Looks of fear and betrayal. "T-Tai..." Summer says slowly through her tears. Tai looks at her attentively giving her his full attention as Summer looks at him in his eyes through her tear filled eyes. "We've made a mistake."
                          
(With (Y/N))
                          
(Y/N) wakes up again. He tried to get a bit more sleep after making breakfast so that he'd have a bit more energy. He's spent two years hoping for his family to love him again. The entire time he'd only get brief visits from his uncle. (Y/N) hears footsteps and starts to get scared, but just hears light knocking followed by Ruby opening the door slowly. "(Y/N)? Mom said to bring you this bowl of cereal." Ruby says while walking towards him and placing the bowl of cereal on the floor before taking a few steps backwards. (Y/N) looks at Ruby confused and unsure. (Y/N) slowly moves towards the bowl of cereal and picks it up before he starts eating it. Ruby walks out of the room and shuts the door. Leaving (Y/N) to eat his cereal. After she closes the door she lets out a small sigh. Two years ago her parents had told her and Yang that they were to start hating their brother. Now they want them to start caring for him again. It's left Ruby in a place where she doesn't know how to feel about him. She'll probably get over it eventually, but for now it's just weird. Ruby goes back downstairs where her family is waiting for her. "Did he like it?" Summer asks nervously. "I think so. He started eating it almost immediately." Ruby explains. Summer smiles and very small tears of joy form in her eyes. It might take a while, but Summer is determined to right the wrong she's done to (Y/N).

It's been a year and still not much progress has been made when it comes to helping (Y/N). Yang and Ruby have come around in terms of treating their brother normally, but now (Y/N) seems scared everytime someone who isn't Qrow comes into his room. He's barely left his room, he will barely let anyone get close to him, Summer once tried to hug him but he kept backing away from her leaving her crying while walking away. Summer decided to try to talk to Qrow about getting his help. The next time Qrow came to visit them Summer tried talking to him. "Um Qrow there's something I need to talk to you about." Summer says. "Sure what is it?" Qrow asks. "It... it's about (Y/N)." Summer says nervously. Qrow doesn't respond for a few seconds and Summer notices this "What about him?" Qrow asks trying not to sound angry. "I... I know you're close with him. For the past year you're the only person he hasn't been scared of when they try to get near him. He'll eat when we bring him food, but I don't think he understands we're trying to make up for what we did. We're trying to show him we love him again, but it doesn't seem like he trusts us. I was wondering if you could maybe talk to him about trying to trust us. I know we don't deserve another chance with him, but I just want to hug my son without him being scared again." Summer explains. Qrow doesn't say anything for a moment as he thinks about what to say before he sighs. "I really shouldn't. I should tell you that this was your mistake not mine and I should tell you to find your own way to fix it. But i'm not going to. Not because we're friends Summer, but because that kid wanted his family back. I had to watch for two years while a kid who just wanted his family back was hit, yelled at, and made to feel like he was worthless. You don't deserve it, but i'll try talking to him." Qrow says before getting up and walking outside. Summer wants to ask him to come back, but lets him leave. Later that night Qrow went into (Y/N)'s window. "Uncle Qrow!" (Y/N) says excitedly. "Hey kid. How's it going?" Qrow asks. "I've been good." (Y/N) says. "That's good kid." Qrow says before hesitating for a moment to speak further. "How have uh... they been treating you?" He asks. "Well... they've been feeding me regularly, Ruby and Yang started asking me to play but I don't trust them, and Tai gave me a stuffed animal a few weeks ago. I still don't fully trust them though. I know it's been a year, buf what if it's all some trick and they just want to get me to trust them before they just treat me worse." (Y/N) explains. Qrow takes a moment and thinks of how to approach this before deciding. "Well kid if they do start to do that I promise i'll come in here and grab you then run out. I think it's safe to just give them a chance." Qrow says with a smile. (Y/N) looks at Qrow and sees the smile. Feeling comforted, (Y/N) hugs Qrow. "Okay Uncle Qrow, I trust you." He says. "Thanks kid. Get some sleep now okay?" Qrow says before flying away leaving (Y/N) to sleep.

(Y/N) wakes up to a knock on his door. Summer is calling for him. "(Y/N), I made breakfast. Do you want some?" Summer asks hesitantly. (Y/N) hesitates to respond, but decides to. "Sure..." (Y/N) says uncertain. Summer is surprised to hear him respond, but happily opens the door and hands (Y/N) a plate of bacon and eggs. (Y/N) starts to eat it, ignoring that Summer is watching until she speaks. "Do you like it?" Summer asks nervously. (Y/N) didn't notice she was still there, but looks up at her and smiles while nodding his head. Summer smiles while tears threaten to form in her eyes. She approaches (Y/N) and wraps him in a hug. (Y/N) is taken by surprise by the hug, but feels his mom's tears on his back and hugs back with a smile on his face. Maybe things were going to be ok after all.
