CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO // THINGS IN THE BARN

Jade walked ahead of Glenn, her pace steady and and the expression upon her face numb as she walked toward Lori. The mother looked at the girl, noting the blood splattered on both her clothes and face as she approached.
"Oh my Lord. Jade are you alright?" Lori asked, her voice concerned as she studied the girl, looking for bites or scratches.
The Horvath ignored her questions, simply grabbing the woman's hand and placing the white paper bag that contained the pills on her palm. Lori looked confused as she glanced down at the bag, looking back up at the girl with worry.
With a soft sigh, Jade walked off, ignoring the others around her, stopping once she was far from the tents. Sitting down the girl placed her head in her hands, allowing the soft breeze to cool her down and allow her to ground herself.
Her breath was unsteady as she heard footsteps approaching her from behind. Glenn soon sat beside her, placing a hand on her forearm as a sign for her to look at her. He held a small cloth that had been soaked with water, he grabbed it with hope of the girl allowing him to clean her up.
Moving her hands away from her face, she sniffled, turning her body slightly as a way to better face him. His hand slowly moved toward her face, softly wiping at the dried blood. She was obviously spaced out, staring down at her fingers, that picked at the grass below them.
"Hey, what happened out there? It was like you couldn't hear me." Glenn questioned, his voice drawing her out of her daydream.
"I don't know." She muttered simply. "It was like my mind went into override. I saw the walker crawling towards you, and I got scared. Before I even knew what I was doing, I was doing it. I couldn't control it."
Glenn tucked a hair behind her ear, watching as her eyes were filling with tears as she stared him. "It's okay. It's over. You're oka-"
"I wasn't worried about myself, Glenn." Jade mumbled, her words barely heard by the boy before her.
"What?"
"I was only worried about you. When it was coming after me, it was like I just couldn't focus on killing it. But, when I thought it was coming towards you, I couldn't just sit there, worrying about myself." She admitted as Glenn wiped a tear off her cheek with his thumb. "I can't lose you, and it's like, I blacked out, and all I could think about was getting you out of danger."
"I haven't even acted like that with my Nick, Theodora, or even my dad. I don't know what came over me. I can't lose anyone right now, Glenn. I can't."
"And you won't. I promise." Glenn spoke, holding her head in his hands.
"You can't promise that, not in this world." She finished, standing from her spot and moving toward the house with the intent of taking a shower.
The next morning, Jade sat beside her niece, staring down at her plate of eggs as her leg shook. The Horvath watched as her brother stood from his spot beside his daughter, moving to edge of the group with his hands in his pockets.
"Um, guys. So... uh, I have to say something. But, you guys can't do anything drastic." Nick started, glancing over at the farmhouse anxiously. Jade turned her head, noting Maggie stood on the porch with her arms crossed over her chest. "The barn is full of walkers." He spoke quickly.
The group looked around at one another, Jade's eyes landing on Glenn's as they both questioned how the others would react to the news. Specifically Shane and Rick.
