Lily saw James reappear in his human form from across the ballroom. "Excuse me," Lily said. SHe moved away from her friends who were still talking to an oblivious Marlene. Lily marched right to James and took his hand, she led him out of the ballroom and into a small hallway. She pulled the pair into a broom closet.
She turned on the light and handed her boyfriend his wand. She took a deep breath and then she hit him upside the head. "What were you thinking?!"
"What?" James asked. He was rubbing the back of his head where Lily had hit him.
"You are breaking the law!" Lily argued.
"I know," James told her. "But I have to, it makes it more safe for the people at school and for Remus."
"James," Lily said. "It's so dangerous," there was a crack in her voice that didn't go unnoticed.
"I haven't got to badly hurt," James assured her.
"Too badly?" Lily asked.
"Well I've broken a few ribs and got a bunch of cuts but it's nothing much."
"That is not nothing much," Lily said.
James just shrugged until he caught the look in Lily's eyes. Her eyes were glassy, as if she was going to cry.
"Are you crying?" James asked her.
"Yes," Lily admitted unashamedly. "My boyfriend might die every full moon."
James pulled Lily in for a hug. And they stood there for a moment.
"Marlene said I'm not allowed to cry," Lily said after she collected her thoughts and tears.
James chuckled softly and then pulled away from his girlfriend to look at her.
"You look beautiful," he told her.
Lily gave him a sappy frown.
"Are you okay?" He asked her.
"Well Marlene thought that you were cheating on me, so I suppose this is better."
"Some cousin," James said under his breath. "But are you okay with my situation?" James said.
"I would rather you didn't," Lily admitted, wiping away a tear. "But I know that you have to. And I couldn't stop you even if I wanted to."
James smiled at his girlfriend she was taking this surprisingly well.
"Just one thing," Lily said.
"Anything," James promised her.
" Next time you shift don't do it right outside of a hand on of Ministry officials."
James laughed again, but he nodded his agreement. "Done."
"I love you," Lily told him.
"I love you too," he told her.
He leaned down a bit and gave her a kiss. Lily kissed him back gratefully. "We should," James said when they broke apart.
"Yeah," Lily agreed. She used her finger to straighten her lipstick and James opened the door.
"Oh wait," Lily said. She grabbed their wands from a shelf next to her. "Here you go," she handed him his wand. He slid it into his inside pocket.
"You don't have a pocket-" James began to say, but he stopped when he saw Lily opening the long slit and sliding her wand into her garder that was up on her thigh.
"What?" Lily asked returning her attention to James.
"Nothing," James lied.
Lily smiled at him. "Yeah okay," she said sarcastically.
He put an arm around her and they left the broom closet together. "Does Marlene know?" Lily asked.
"No," James said simply.
"Well you told me," Lily said. "Why can't Sirius tell Marlene?"
"Marlene doesn't care."
"I think she would."
"Well it's really up to Sirius" James admitted.
"Why doesn't he want to tell her?" Lily asked.
"I don't know," James said in a quieter voice. They approached their friends and Remus still looked apprehensive.
"Where did you two go?" Marlene asked.
"I just needed to talk to James," Lily said.
"And you..." Remus encouraged.
"Believe in him and you all and your cause even though he is an idiot," Lily responded. If Sirius didn't want to tell Marlene Lily wasn't going to.
"What cause?" Marlene asked.
"This is a charity ball," James reminded her.
"Right," Marlene said.
Lily glanced at Remus and he looked relieved. Lily and her friends had a great night and at the end Lily found herself siting on the couch talking to Remus about the Charms paper they had all written. Sirius and Marlene were arguing with James about the quidditch play.
"Well I found the answer in a history of magic," Remus said.
"As did I," Lily said.
Lily felt somebody's gaze in her and she turned to see her boyfriend looking at her.
"What is it?" Lily asked him.
"Nothing," James said. He didn't remove his gaze though. Lily turned back to look at Remus.
"But I saw 1276," she told him.
" I thought it was 1375," he said.
Lily was about to argue, but Mrs Potter walked back in.
"Remus your father called," she said. "He wants to know if you are going home, you are more than welcome to stay here."
"Thank you, but I think I should go," Remus said politely. "Pete let's go." Peter was obviously almost asleep but he got up and they apparate away.
"I assume that Lily and Marlene are staying," Mrs Potter said with a knowing smile.
"If that is alright with you," Lily said.
"Of course darling," Mrs Potter said. " it's not like I have to make up another room or anything."
Lily was sure that she blushed and she could see Marlene's surprise out of the corner of her eye.
"Well good night all," Mrs Potter said. She waved good night and walked up the stairs. "Oh! Don't forget to use protection!"
Lily's mouth dropped open and she heard Sirius scoff.
"Mum!" James complained.
"Sorry," she called back unashamedly.
James stood up off the chair he was sitting in and moved to sit next to Lily on the couch.
"Sorry my mum is so embarrassing," James said.
Lily laughed, "Did you forget what my mom said when we left?"
James laughed at the memory. "What did she say?" Sirius asked nosily.
"Lily's mum said that she needed to 'get some'." Marlene answered him with a giggle.
Lily and James both blushed and Sirius laughed loudly.
After a little longer James pulls Lily upstairs.
