I sat with Toothless as I drew in my book, something was really bugging me though and I kept going back to Oswald's notes, Luna kept pausing at certain points, it's not that I don't trust her it's just... what part of this secret writing did she leave out? I looked at it and tried hard to figure out where the spots she paused at might've been, then I found a pattern, a single word that repeated through the entire thing, that had to be it. I grabbed my journal and got to work trying to decipher it.
By midday Astrid came to find me. "There you are! Fishlegs has been looking for you, he thought you'd gone ahead to see the MossWings like you planned, have you been here all day?" she asked.
"Huh? Oh! Sorry, I've been trying to decipher and teach myself this secret dragon hunter language, Luna keeps skipping over this one word and I can't figure out what it is," I said, showing her the journal and my notes but she didn't even look, she just closed the book.
"There's probably a good reason she's skipping over it, you can just ask her when she gets back, it hasn't even been a day though, she's probably still flying," she crossed her arms, "Look, I know you're bummed you can't take Toothless to an island of Night Furies but she said that it's too dangerous for any of us to go with her, we have to trust her."
I listened to her and sighed, gathering my notes as she sat on my desk, "Yeah, you're right, I should just wait, I mean there's no reason we shouldn't trust her, she's done so much to help us and she's with at least one of us most of the time so there's really no chance for her to actually be plotting against us or something," I chuckled at the ridiculousness of that thought, "she's dating Ruffnut after all, anyone who was truly hiding important things from us or was plotting to turn against us wouldn't get involved with the twins in any way. They come up with so many conspiracies and some of them are right," I stood up and took Astrid's hand, "I should go meet Fishlegs, hopefully the MossWings are still out." I pecked her cheek and hurried off.Unfortunately we got chased away from all the tiny dragons because we might've gotten a little too close to the babies. I suddenly felt a little jealous of Luna.
"I don't know how Luna does it, those little dragons can be mean," Fishlegs said as we flew.
"She can talk to dragons, remember? She just tells them she's not a threat and suddenly they're calm," I sighed, "I'm a little envious to be honest but in all fairness, we did get a little too close."
"Yeah, all those moms were just protecting their babies so it's not their fault for being protective, I am glad we checked on the one that lost her mate, those babies are growing so big already," he smiled, "and I didn't know that they don't lose that nice teal and turquoise color as they grow, moss just grows on top of it and makes them seem more green as adults!"
"Yeah," I chuckled, "that was pretty neat to find out, I wonder how Astrid is doing with little Dewdrop. When I watched her, I nearly lost my other foot because she knocked a sword down off a rafter, I don't even know how your Gronckle-iron sword got in my hut in the first place," I pet Toothless a little after we landed. "Thanks for getting us away from those protective mamas so fast, bud," he grunted happily as he looked back at me.
"I'll bet you it was the twins playing 'Let's see who we can get in trouble', Luna's journal ended up under my bed, thankfully she was understanding. Just told me to ask when I borrow it next time," he chuckled and slid off Meatlug's back, giving her scratches under the chin, she always loves those."Hey, you never told me why you were late," he mentioned.
"Ah, I'm sorry about that, again, it's just... there's this word that Luna kept skipping over when she was reading and I tried figuring out what it was, I got really enveloped in trying to decipher the secret language," I admitted.
"Well... I'm sure she had a good reason for skipping over it, remember how she told us to call her Luna? Later we found out she's a Grimborn but we never learned her first name, maybe that's what's she's skipping over," Fishlegs absently pet Meatlug as he held his chin with his free hand, "We can always just ask when she gets back."
I chuckled, "That's pretty much exactly what Astrid said, but it makes sense that Luna would skip over her name if she doesn't like it, I guess I should just drop it, I shouldn't invade her privacy like that. It's not like she's hiding anything we need to know, we have a name to call her," I walked beside Toothless as we started brainstorming what to do next since we definitely weren't going to be welcome back with the MossWings. We both ended up trying to teach ourselves the crude version of the secret language Oswald wrote in, we skipped over that one word and focused on what we knew, or at least what Luna told us, there were still two pages she hadn't gotten to and translated. We'd gotten nowhere with any of it, some words were only two characters while overs were over fifteen but they weren't in quite the right places that Luna should've read them.
"This is a lot more complicated than I thought..." I rubbed my head and sighed, "We really should just wait for Luna to get back."
"Life on the Edge is weirdly dull when she's gone, maybe it's just because she teaches me something new almost every day and her wings are fascinating? I always want to study them, apparently they're really ticklish though," Fishlegs laughed a little.
I chuckled, "That explains her squirming when Toothless nudges certain spots, you notice how she kind of chirps when she's surprised or really happy? Like a bird almost."
"Yeah, I've heard it a lot since apparently I sneak up on her a lot, I guess I just have light footsteps," he shrugged with a smile, "oh, or it might just be because I usually come up when she's distracted."
"She stares off into space a lot but that's just because she's really thinking about something, there's always something on her mind," Ruffnut said as she came in with her brother but they didn't cause trouble for once, "So what's going on? We just talking about things Luna does? Because have I got a story for you!"
