IV. ALLIANCES
-

ANNA HAD hardly slept, partially from pain and partially from nerves.

Mary was stirring as well, even disappearing from the room for a time.

Annalise was curious as to where she'd gone, pulling a cape on over her nightdress and bringing a candle in case she found herself in a dark corner.

She padded through the corridors of the castle, the cold stone shocking her feet with every step. She appreciated the silence of the night, she just wished it could be a bit brighter. The darkness held too many mysterious possibilities, too many opportunities for ghosts and goblins.

Anna didn't necessarily believe all those things, but when she was living in Scotland, she did make her governess check under the bed for monsters. Every night.

The princess wandered outside, taking a deep breath of fresh air, basking in the peaceful silence, staring at the glow of the moon.

It was cool outside, the wind gently blowing against Anna's skin.

"Planning on taking an evening stroll, Princess?" Bash smirked, seemingly leading his horse to the stables. "Barefoot, I see. I can't say I'm surprised."

"No, I only needed a moment of peace." Bash was surprised to hear no witty comeback, no flirtatious quip, she didn't even tear her eyes away from their fixed position.

"I heard what happened today. I'm sorry I wasn't there to protect you,"

Anna then looked at him, brows furrowed. "What could you have done?" The glow of the moon illuminated her features perfectly, highlighting all of her beautiful attributes softly. For someone who hated the night, it truly did her justice.

"I-" Bash paused. "I don't know."

"Nostradamus says I'll be healed within a few days. I only hope they find that poor girl." Annalise pulled off her hood, approaching the horse calmly.

"I don't trust him, he works for Catherine," Sebastian's eyes were glowing in the moonlight, like small pieces of the sky itself had found their way into his irises.

Annalise pressed her palm against the horse's snout, gliding it downward softly as she held her candle in her other hand. "I trust them both,"

Bash was taken aback by Annalise's behavior. She was quiet, too quiet. He worried that all the chaos of life at French Court was getting to her. "Are you alright, Annalise?"
