"Mal!" yelled Halfborn, running after her. "Mallory!"

TJ stared after him. Mallory had just stormed out of the room in frustration, and they were all afraid that it was about to get ugly. "Will they be okay, do you think?" he asked, breaking the silence.

Alex sighed. "I don't know. They like each other, but... it's complicated, you know? Relationships are complicated, and people are complicated, and for people like Halfborn, who keep things simple, and people like Mallory, who aren't very in-control of their emotions, they can be a lot harder than they look."

"That was insightful," commented Magnus, and Alex sighed again.

"Thanks, Maggie. I try," she said.

Outside, Halfborn had his foot wedged in the door of Mallory's room. She looked like she didn't know whether she wanted to yell at and/or stab someone, or just cry.

"Mal, please, I can't help you if I don't know what the problem is. Look, I really like you, but you have to sort this out," Halfborn pleaded.

"Just... just... don't do anything!" Mallory threw her hands up in defeat. She wasn't really sure what she was feeling, but that was normally the case. It was bothering her now because as much as she wanted to keep this relationship going, it wasn't working, and Halfborn was pointing out valid things, things she didn't want to admit to herself.

"It's okay, Mal, just breathe." She felt strong hands around her waist and her boyfriend's breath tickling her ear. As much as she felt comfortable there, she pushed him off.

"Too soon, Gunderson."

"What's your logic right now, Mallory?" Halfborn asked her defeatedly.

"It's not about her, you know? I knew she was a bitch, and I dropped her a couple of months ago, and it's not the point that she's trying to snake her way back into my life. Afterlife. Whatever."

"Then what's it about?"

"I just... look, it's not that I don't like you, okay? Because I do, I really like you, even though you're an idiot sometimes. Well, most times. Uh, okay, only sometimes." Mallory shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts so that she could convey what was important. "I just don't know how to make this work, you know? And I'm really sorry about that, I am. I'm just not a people person, I guess, and I don't have the best control over what I feel and when I feel it, and my emotions are so out of line, you know?"

Halfborn nodded. He knew.

Mallory continued. "And I'm impulsive. I do whatever I think is best in the moment, you know? I just listen to that little voice, and if someone tells me to do something, I do it. That's why I set that bomb, and that's why I disabled it. I'm not proud of it, but it's who I am, I guess. I don't really know how to stay consistent; I'm not familiar with commitment, and that's kind of what relationships are about. I really like you, and sometimes all I want to do it just kiss you, but I also don't want to mess you around, 'cause that's just mean, and... yeah. You know?"

"Kind of. Look, I know this is a difficult conversation for you to have, but I'm here for you, okay? If you want to talk, or anything. And it doesn't really matter if you're not great and consistent, stable relationships. Name one demigod that is. I can't. If you want to figure out how to do it together, I'm down. If not, that's cool too. But, just, tell me what you want, yeah? It's not helpful to either of us if you just call people idiots and storm out. Communication is important, you know?" Mallory smiled a little at that; when you spent a lot of time with someone, you picked up their speaking habits, and they'd spent a lot of time together. Maybe he did actually listen.

"Yeah, I know. Maybe this could work, you know?"

"You wanna give it a shot?"

"Yeah. Sorry in advance for when I screw up."

"You won't screw up." Mallory raised an eyebrow. "Okay, you probably will - we both will. But it doesn't matter that much, you know? We're learning."

"Okay."

"C'mere, Mal." And she didn't even mind the nickname, she just let him pull her into a kiss. Maybe this could work out, you know?

okay but mallory would be so cute just saying 'you know?' at the end of everything awe
