CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Start from the beginning

"I'm pretty sure those don't exist, Stiles." Venus laughs, looking behind her at him.

They had kept walking for a little while longer, Scott still leading the way, when they reach a small cliff, hearing a loud coyote howl. The sound makes Stiles jump, grasping tightly onto Scott, making him drop his phone into a puddle below them.

"I'm so sorry." Stiles quickly apologizes. "I hate coyotes so much. They always sound like they're mauling some tiny, helpless animal."

Scott jumps off the boulder they were standing on, Venus and Stiles jumping shortly after him. As the werewolf picks up his phone from the small puddle, finding that it still works, Stiles spots something in front of them. He quickly grabs the flashlight out of Scotts hands and starts moving towards it, the other two following closely behind.

"I think we found it." The human boy speaks, flashing the light onto the wrecked car in front of them.

"Hold on." Venus stops. "Why is it still here? Didn't you say this was eight years ago?"

"I guess it was too much of a pain in the ass to tow." Stiles shrugs. "Let's go."

However, Venus doesn't move, she felt almost stuck in her place as she looked around the small ditch they were in. The two boys were now directly in front of the car, inspecting something on it, while Venus was trying to focus on the surrounding area, trying to get an understanding of anything.

Her focus was broken by an automated voice and Stiles screaming, the sudden noise made her heart stop for a second as she looked over at them.

"I think I just had a minor heart attack." Stiles gasps from the ground, looking up at them.

"Guys, I don't know how to explain this." Venus speaks lowly. "But I don't think we should be here. It feels almost wrong?"

The two boys look at her in confusion before their attention was caught by Scott pointing out a pair of glowing eyes a few feet ahead of them. The three of them stand there, looking at it for a minute before Scott takes off after it, Venus having to hold Stiles back as he tried to follow after his best friend.

"He's got werewolf super speed." She reminds him. "How long do you think you'll be able to keep up with him?"

"Well, are you getting anything?" he sighs, throwing his arms up around him.

"Other than an immense feeling we shouldn't be here? Not really, no."

Stiles lets out a sigh before he starts walking in the direction Scott had ran off in, Venus trailing behind him, gently biting her cheeks. She was feeling greatly disappointed in herself for not being able to do what the boys asked of her.

"I'm sorry." She speaks, and Stiles could hear the sadness in her tone, suddenly feeling guilty at how he reacted. "I really do want to help, but they just don't like talking to me sometimes."

"It's okay, let's just find Scott so we can get out of here." he sighs, holding his hand out for her and pulling her over the boulder and onto the slightly higher ground he was already on, grasping onto her finger for a few seconds longer than needed. "You know, it's kind of funny how you talk about your abilities."

"What do you mean?" she turns to him with furrowed eyebrows.

"I don't know, almost like you're bitching about trees?" They both laugh at his odd statement.

"It's just frustrating sometimes. If I don't focus enough I get nothing, if I focus too hard I get too much."

"You'll get the hang of it soon enough."

He smiles at her encouragingly, making her smile back at him softly; both of them feeling that familiar aching feeling in their chests. They kept walking through the woods side by side, until they came across a small opening through some boulders. Stiles looks at it strangely, before deciding they should find Scott quickly.

And they found him a few seconds later, running full speed towards them. Stiles quickly informs him that they may have found something before leading them back to the small den, the two boys make their way inside causing Venus to slightly panic.

"Guys!" she calls out to them from outside, urgency evident in her tone. "We really shouldn't be venturing into a coyote den."

She gets no response from the boys however as they continue exploring the items inside, when Scott finally comes to the realisation that they've contaminated her home. They collectively came to the decision to call Stiles' dad since they technically found a crime scene. He arrives at the small den a few minutes later with a couple other deputies with him, they take a look inside before the sheriff himself comes towards the three teens.

"Are you sure it was her?" the older man asks skeptically, referring to the boys' theory that the coyote was actually Malia; the girl from the case he had reopened.

"Yes. I looked into her eyes and they glowed." Scott replies. "Just like mine."

"But this was a four-legged coyote, not a girl?"

"Well yeah but see, that's exactly the part we don't have figured out yet." Stiles states unconvincingly.

"But if it was a full moon and she turned while her mom was driving, something could've happened." Scott attempts to convince the man who was looking at them like they were crazy.

"Horrible things. Ripping, shredding, tearing things."

"Which is probably what caused the accident."

She watches the two boys as they bounce back and forth between each other trying to explain their theory to the man in front of them. Venus looking between the three of them, slightly amused.

"That makes sense." Stiles' dad speaks, making Venus stifle a laugh at his expression. "In a Chinese folktale! Boys...This is insane."

"Look, Mr. Stilinski- uh, Sheriff?" Venus steps forward, shaking her head at her own words. "I know it sounds absolutely crazy, but it is possible."

The man wouldn't admit it, but over the past couple weeks he had grown a soft spot for the girl standing in front of him. Which is why he purses his lips with a shake of his head, seemingly convinced that she was convinced.

"I need this kept quiet. I don't want anyone hearing about this, especially Mr. Tate."

The mans wishes were instantly denied by the universe however, as Scotts father pulls up with Mr. Tate climbing out of the passenger seat. The man subsequently causing a scene the moment he steps into the circle of deputies.

The three teens leave shortly after, Stiles dropping her off in front of her house before heading off to drop off Scott. Venus makes a beeline for her fathers room, informing him of their findings and they spent the rest of the night finding some sort of explanation to their current situation.
