I scramble over to Lane's side, healing the cuts across her back. God she'd lost a lot of blood before she showed up here. Not to mention I think she's exhausted from over usage of her powers. I scoop her up and carry her to my room, gently setting her down on my bed and taking a better look at her injuries. Other than the cuts on her back, blood loss, and exhaustion, it seems like she's fine. Her hair is a lot longer than the last time I saw her. I sit beside her for a couple of minutes to make sure she's ok, then I stand. "I guess I'm sleepin on the couch tonight." I mutter, starting off towards the living room. Lane grabs my wrist. "Stay." I hear her whisper. She looks up at me. "Please?" I sit back down. "I'm not goin anywhere, Darlin."
I open one eye and look around. Lane is snuggled up next to me like I'm a teddy bear. I move carefully so as to not wake her. I tiptoe out into the kitchen. "I should probably make her breakfast." I say, staring at my fridge. I have eggs... I think. I open up the fridge. Yes! I have eggs! I snatch the carton and grab an old frying pan. I'm like eighty percent sure the only reason I have this is for grilled cheese...? I hear Lane stumble out of the bedroom. " 'G mornin." She grumbles. I turn and smile at her. "Mornin. How do you like your eggs?" I ask. "Doesn't matter." Lane shrugs, flopping onto the couch. "Alrighty then." I mumble, staring at the pan nervously. I CAN'T mess this up. I crack an egg into the pan. I glance over at Lane. I doubt, besides split ends, that she's cut her hair much since Starfall. It's long and thick, falling well past her waist. My guess is she usually keeps it braided.
It's rare we get to meet in person. Only once a year do the Star Beings, along with Hera and Elian, meet up. And it's only to discuss whether it's safe. But it's always interesting to see how everyone has changed. Last time I saw, Karson's hair was long enough to put in a bun and Caleb's was long enough to have a braid all the way down his back. Everyone either let their hair grow out or chopped most of it off.
"DJ, is something burning?" Lane snaps me out of my thoughts. I glance at the eggs. "SHIT." I hear Lane cackle. "NICE TO KNOW YOU FIND ME ALMOST COMMITTING ACCIDENTAL ARSON FUNNY!!!" I yell at her. She laughs harder. Water flies out of the sink and onto the pan with a loud sizzle. I groan. "I am... so sorry Lane." "It's fine. It's probably better if I cook." Lane stands. I glare at her. "You better sit your ass back down on that couch." Lane tilts her head in confusion. "Huh?" "I'm not sure if I did a good job healing you. It's been a while since I've healed myself, and even longer since I've healed another person." I admit. Lane chuckles. "I'm fine DJ. And a little pain is better than you burning the building down."I pull on a ripped up tank top and workout shorts. "What are you doing?" I hear Lane ask from the living room. I wrap my knuckles. "Getting dressed. I have to go out." I say. I glance at myself in the mirror and fix my green streak. That thing popped up after about a year in Worlomands.
I step into the hall and grab my boots and backpack. Ok, I've got tape and my bat. I should be good. "Can I come?" Lane asks. "No." I double check for pain meds. I can't heal myself until I get home, so that shit is useful. "Why?" I glance over at Lane, starting to get annoyed. "I have shit to do that you shouldn't see. Mostly because it's partially illegal." I grumble. "Ok, we'll now I'm REALLY interested. Talk." I shouldn't have said anything. But no. I can't keep my damn mouth shut around my girlfriend. "It's just work. An underground kinda thing." "Like smuggling?" "No. Think more... aggressive." Lane pauses to think. Then she gets up, walks over, and smacks me. "ARE YOU SERIOUSLY FIGHTING IN A BETTING RING?!?!" She yells. "Yes...?" Lane stomps away with furry in her eyes. "ARE YOU DUMB???" "Oh will you calm down? I've only lost one fight and it was my first. I'm the best in the city, if not the region. I'm the one veterans warn rookies about when I step into the ring." I say with pride. Lane smacks me again.
"Jesus christ, what do you want? Proof that I'm gonna be fine?" I throw my arms up in the air with annoyance. Lane considers my statement. "Wait... wait no-" "Take me to your fight. I want to watch." I glare at Lane. There's no talking her out of this. "Fine. But you're putting on a hood."
