Everyone was on their phones and watched the hate comments pile up. The news was making headlines especially since the launch of a new product that both the families were collaborating on was soon. A sports channel had taken notice of this and found out that your full name was (L/N) (Mother's Maiden Name or MM/N) (F/N), they started to question why you, The (MM/N) (F/N), young volleyball legend suddenly left volleyball, you were the youngest and most talented player on the Under 18 national team at one point. Some journalists went as far as to say that the corporate world made you leave sports. Exposes were being aired and your head spun with everything going on. People were calling you a money minded fake person. It baffled you how the day had taken a complete 180. You vowed never to say anything that might jinx your day again.
The entire team stood in horror as they watched the news airing on the television...and even worse...it was just 9 am. You had turned out to be so much more than they had previously assumed you to be. Everyone stayed seated in shock. Tsukishima knew there was much more to your life. But he only stared in stunned silence at all the hate airing about you, at all the gossip...they were talking about you like they knew everything but what made him sick to his stomach was that you weren't who they described at all and you went with it? Were handling the situation with smoothness even though you were just crying to yourself about how you couldn't handle happy emotions? What was going on? He clenched his fists in rage when he realized there was probably more.
You changed into a crisp white formal shirt and some black trousers. Tying your hair in a high ponytail you walked back out and up to Kiyoko who was now calm her voice helped your racing mind, "My parents understood the situation and are glad that we're friends. They'll be taking care of things on their side. They insisted I join you for the meeting with your parents... I don't know why though."
You shrug, indifferent, "I don't mind. This can still turn out good both ways. Just like volleyball, the game doesn't end till the ball touches the ground. Here, nothing is good or bad until the day ends."
You set up your laptop and webcam while Kiyoko instructed the team to not bother either of you for a while and to keep quiet and away. She was clearly angry.
She sat beside you and greeted your parents formally, just as you did. She was flabbergasted when you bowed and acknowledged your parents as, "Mother and Father." and they responded with, "Don't call us that, you disgrace." This was just the beginning.
You sat stoically because this was normal to you, "Allow me to explain, Sir and Ma'am. We were just at my home talking when she held my hands which were cold. We are friends and nothing more, another friend must have posted a picture unknowingly since neither of us even knew about each other's families before today. I swear that before this day ends I will have this buried underground. We can even see this as a positive since there was nothing really there we just have gained more free advertising for the upcoming launch gala."
Your mother spoke up coldly, "What about you prancing about like an ugly slut all over the place. Your being a model has worsened this entire ordeal."
"I'll clean this mess up and don't worry about it. I'll have gained more following by the end of next week and that will bring in more publicity. It's all good. As you know, I have the opportunity to launch many free adverts and endorsements because of being a model. because of me being a model you've gained more investors and sponsors. I promise to fix this."
Your father's hateful tone made Kiyoko lean her face out of the frame, " You brat. When are you going to start playing again? We expect that your good for nothing self to start soon. The media is turning into a riot because of this. We have many sports-related sponsors threatening to pull out of a big upcoming deal because of YOU. Your skills better have not diminished."
You don't notice Kiyoko step out of the frame completely or the tears filling her eyes, "My external injuries have healed nicely and all my internal bleeding and wounds have lessened. I should be good to play in about 6 months. I'll even announce that to the press today. I'll tell them that there was an incident that left me with several injuries that required a lot of time to heal and that I'll be back by next season or sooner. on the bright side, I may even be able to use this as a beacon for several other sports covers and magazines. I'm confident that I'll end this in profit."
Your parents then took turns insulting you and pointing out your flaws which you heard without objection or expressions. Snarky comments turned into heated profanities to which you just nodded. Kiyoko watched in horror, silent tears streaming down her face as you took the abuse. She could only see a prodigy in every manner sitting in front of her. She watched you calmly suggested several openings and better strategies to make the best of the situation at hand. The power you held in the real world baffled her and your reaction to the worst possible degradation scarred her soul. When they were finally done speaking, you were smiling at your birth givers, a bright smile that made them calm down, "I will take my leave now so that I can take care of this mess and do good on my word. I wish you a good day Mother and Father. Please take care of yourselves and keep in good health." They nodded at you before disconnecting the call.
When you looked up you saw Kiyoko silently sobbing. "Oh My God! Kiyoko!" You picked her up in your arms and carried her out of your room when she pointed to the door and set her down on the couch next to Yachi. The entire team was beyond shocked. "P-please tell me they didn't m-mean that." Kiyoko grabbed your hands again and held them tightly.
You smiled at her softly, "They meant every word. but that doesn't mean I felt it. Don't worry Kiyoko. I'm gonna fix this. I promise." Your phone beeped loudly and you sighed, "I have to go now for an interview on the news about this. I promise that I'll make this right, alright?" You stepped away from her and stood up tall. Turning to Daichi you bowed to him, " I'm so sorry to burden you so suddenly but will you please take care of everyone including the kids, Captain. Just until I'm back. I promise to make up for it."
Daichi looked horrified, "Yes of course. Go. We'll hold down the fort here. Please be safe and be back soon."
You could only nod and bow to the entire team before you had to run out to the back door where an expensive shiny black limo was waiting for you.
Daichi could only watch the headlines dart across the T.V. and how many journalists were gathering for your press conference. Sugawara slid down to sit beside Asahi who looked like he would throw up at any moment. Yachi was sobbing loudly into Yamaguchi's chest beside a traumatized Kiyoko. Kageyama felt his head spin with everything that was happening. Hinata was wrapped tightly in Nishinoya's and Tanaka's arms.
Tsukishima blinked silently before growling out loud drawing everyone's attention, "Who the fuck posted that?"
I'll make sure it was the last thing that they ever post.
