"three day supply of K-rations, chocolate bars, charms candy, powdered coffee, sugar, and matches, compass, bayonet, entrenching tool, ammunition, gas mask, musette bag with amo, my webbing, my .45, canteen, two cartons of smokes, hawkins mine, two grenades, smoke grenades, gamma grenade, tnt, and this bullshit," toye yelled slamming the rope on the ground, "and a pair of nasty skivves."

"what's your point?" perco smirked.

"you this stuff weighs as much as i do. i've still got my chute, my reserve chute, my mae west, and my m-one" toye answered angrily.

"where are you keeping them brass knuckled?" perco smiled while getting up to leave.

"i could use some brass knuckles." joe frowned.

he continued to pack up in stuff until he felt someone tap his shoulder. he quickly turned around and saw it was you. smiling, he tense started to soften up.

"love, how long did that take you to remember?" you said with your strong british accent.

you were from england, but at a very young age, your parents immigrated to the u.s. for work where you went to a nice boarding school. you were the only child. you signed up to join the nursing crops until you were asked to join the 101st airborne as their medic.

"long enough" he smirked.

"here," you handed him brass knuckles, "you need them more than i do"

"wait what, where did you get these? and what about you? you don't have anything to defend yourself." joe said looking at you worryingly.

"i've got my hand gun and trust me, i know how to fight with just my hands if a german charges at me," you smirked, "just like i beat your ass in hand-to-hand combat"

"now you listen y/n-" joe started but couldn't finish as you both started laughing.

"i'll see you later" you said giving him a kiss on the cheek.

you got up and left, but the smile soon faded after your brave face became fear.

you and joe have been close since the first day of taccoa. toye, lieb, gaurnere, and malark were the first to befriend you. now, those times became memory as you all prepared for war.

~~~
"no jump tonight. the air is caked up in fog. we are on a 24 hour lock down" lieutenant meehan announced as you all groaned.
all the men dropped their gear back into the barracked before heading into one of the big tents for a movie. everyone was pissed and upset. bringing us so close to war just to hear there was a delay in our flight was not the best move.
joe wondered outside the tent looking for you as you were no where to be seen.
in a panic he ran over to winters and nixion who were talking outside the tent.
"sirs," joe saluted, "have you seen l/n? i can't find her anywhere. not in the movie tent or the barracks"
the lieutenants looked around before spotting her leaning against the fence with her medical satchel.
"she's over there corporal" winter pointed. joe quickly saluted the lieutenants before running over to you where he noticed your stained face with tears.
"y/n? are you okay?" he asked. you quickly looked up at him before looking back down playing with the strap on your bag.
"hey, what's wrong?" joe asked again crouching in front of you making you look up at him.
"what if i can't save you all? what if many die in my hands before i can give them help? what if something happens to you and i can't save you?" you started sobbing and joe pulled you into a tight hug.
you all were scared. scared that many would die.
"that's not gonna happen, you know why? because you and gene are one of the best medics in this whole division. you guys know everything from left to right, you know practically more than us because without weapons, you guys need to know other techniques to stay alive. do not think you won't save anyone and if someone dies, that's part of life. just worry about the people you know you can save. one person at a time. you can't save everyone. you weren't meant to save everyone."
you sat up and pulled joe into a long tight hug. his head buried in your should, tears slipping from his own eyes as you continued to sob.
~~~

it was the nest morning. everything was quiet but the sound of birds chirping and the sound of marching, and your equipment shaking.

the men laid on the ground in row of two, except for the lieutenants and the medics.

"gene and l/n are passing around medicine for air plane sickness. take one now and one later on the plane and you'll be fine," winter said standing up front. he was silent for a minute before taking a deep breath, "good luck lady and gentleman . good luck. see you on the battle field."

one by one he would take each soldiers hand lift them up and giving it a shake as they start to board. he took genes hand and helped him up before making his way over to you.

he held out his hand. as you took it, he slowly lifted you up keeping eye contact. you softly smiled before he smiled back patting your arm before leading you to the plane as the last soldier.

you climbed on the plane with the help of skinny, before taking your seat next to joe toye.

he quickly grabbed your hand and looked over at you.

"stay with me?" he said squeezing your hand.

"always."
