John brought Sean into his own bedroom and set him on the bed.

"Okay. Behave while yer in here. Ye hear?"

"Yeah."

"Good. Now, get to bed."

"But I don't want to."

"Get to bed. Now."

"Daddy.............do I have to?"

"Yer five. Yes. You need a bed time. Right now, yer muther would kill me if she found out you were awake considering, its past yer bed time. Plus, I don't want you waking me up because I want to go to bed."

"Did you brush your teeth?"

"Ey. I'm supposed to ask that to you! I did. Did you?"

"Yes."

"Are you telling the truth?"

"Yes."

"Yer not just running yer tooth brush under the water are you?"

Sean laughed. "Maybe."

"Go brush yer teeth before I do it for you."

Sean got up out of bed and left the bedroom. John laid on the bed and looked up at the ceiling. He picked the newspaper from that morning and looked at the front page.

JOHN LENNON MOVES BACK TO UK

John just shook his head and continued to read the article. It talked about that night he was shot. That was the main topic of every newspaper since its been nearly a month.

John hated being reminded of what happened. Almost every day, he is reminded by it. He set the newspaper down again when Sean came back.

"Did you brush yer teeth for real this time?"

"Yes!" Sean said, before smiling.

John grabbed his face gently and smelled his breath. "Okay. I just wanted to make sure."

John picked him up and set him on the bed.

"Okay. Bed time."

"But I don't want to."

"Come on. Make me happy, will ye?"

"No."

"Please?"

"Okay. Only for you."

"Yay. Promise you won't wake me for any reason?"

"What if the house is on fire?"

"If the house was on fire, then you would be in big trouble."

"What if I didn't do it?"

"Ye'll probably be the only one awake. So, whatever you do might set the house on fire."

"But its night. I'll be sleeping."

"Hmm. Okay. If that's the case, then someone set my house on fire. Then you could wake me."

"But how would I know if the house is on fire?"

"If you see smoke anywhere in the room besides cigarette smoke, then you know."

"Okay."

"Now, stop stalling, lay down, and close yer eyes so you could sleep."

"But I want to stay up."

"If you stay up, and yer mum found out, I would be the one in trouble."

"How would she punish you?"

"She would put me in the dog house."

"Why would you have to go there? We don't have a dog."

"No son. Its an expression. I would be sleeping on the couch."

"Oh. But why is that an ecpresson? It sounds like yer going in an actual dog house."

"I don't know. I didn't make it up. And its pronounced: expression."

"Ecpresson."

"Close enough."

"Will I ever know how to say that word?"

"Once yer older. You still have lots to learn."

"But I want to be older now."

"You have to wait on that."

"But why?"

"Because..............uh.................that's a hard question."

"Can you answer it?"

"Well, that's life. You have to wait 18 years before you grow up."

"That's too long away." Sean whined.

"I know. But just wait. We both have to."

"I don't understand why I have to wait so long to grow up."

"Well, five years ago, you were born. The years go based on when you were born. In yer case, you were born October 9,1975. Each year that goes by adds a year to yer life. Make sense?"

"Yeah."

"Okay good. Now, will you go to bed now?"

Sean nodded and laid down. John got in to bed next to him and turned off a lamp.

"Is mom going to join us?"

"She might later. She's talking to someone on the phone."

"Oh. Okay."

"Even though its just me, will you go to bed?"

"Yeah."

The next morning, John woke up and Sean was out of bed. He was already in the kitchen, eating breakfast.

John got out of bed and went to the kitchen. "Ey kiddo."

"Hi."

"Have a nice night?"

Sean nodded. "Sleep good."

"That's good. Now, finish eating. Where's yer mum?"

"I don't know. Haven't seen her at all."

"Hmm. Okay. That's fine. Just eat."

"Okay. Dad, where did mom go?"

"I don't know and I don't care."

"Why don't you care?"

"Because she's an adult. Plus, we still didn't make up."

"Why though?"

"Because some of us are being childish and wish not to talk to the other."

"But dad, that's you."

"I know. I wish not to talk to her."

"Did you kick her out?"

"No. She can come back if she wants."

"Do you think she will?"

"Are you scared she won't come back?"

"Yeah."

"I'll try my best to have her come back. Okay?"

"Okay. But what if she doesn't?"

"I can't make her come back. She has to come back on her own."
