Web Testing Interest Group

The mission of the Web Testing Interest Group, part of the Web Testing Activity, is to develop and deploy testing mechanisms and collateral materials for testing of Web technologies. In particular, tests developed as well as the testing framework should work on non-desktop devices such as mobile devices, web-enabled television sets etc.

General Components

The general components the group is expected to deliver include (but are by no means explicitly limited to) the following.

• testing framework
• Web test server
• test-case review mechanisms
• test-suite management system
• test reporting tool
• test-case management/tracking tools
• test-case results reporting/output tools
• spec annotation tools (for annotating testable assertions in specifications, and for linking them to test cases)
• documentation on test-case authoring, execution, and results collection

The group is also expected to develop test runners. Test runners are responsible for running a series of tests within a specific class of applications (such as a browser or an authoring tool). Milestones

The following milestones will be refine by the Group:

• August 2011 - June 2012: Working Groups integration
• November 2011: Testing Framework (Runner and Management) announcement at TPAC
• March 2012: Guidelines for testing activities in W3C Working Groups

Steps for joining

Per charter, participation in the Web Testing Interest Group is open both to W3C members and to public participants.

• If you work for or represent a W3C Member organization:
  1. Use the form for getting a W3C account
  2. Have your Advisory Committee Representative nominate you using the form for joining the group.
• If you do not work for a W3C Member organization, the please follow the steps to join the group as a public Invited Expert. The process involves getting an account and filling out a form for joining the group as Invited Expert.
