About this property

St Matthias Lodge is a unique cottage style property in the heart of Wellswood village.
The property has off road parking and consists of a master bedroom with kingsize bed, wardrobe, drawer storage and wash basin. The second bedroom is ideal for a child or granny and has a single bed, small chest of drawers and clothes hanging space. There is a kitchen/lounge area with breakfast bar, oven, hob, microwave, fridge, Nespresso coffee machine and dishwasher. The lounge is tastefully decorated and has a wood burner for our guests use. A selection of books, dvds and board games are provided, There is freeview TV. And free wifi is available for our guests.
The luxury bathroom has a toilet, basin with shaver point, walk-in rainfall shower and full size bath. The property is fitted with carbon monoxide alarm and smoke detection. There is gas central heating throughout. We are able to provide a high chair and travel cot.
All bed linen, tea towels and bath and beach towels are provided (please do not take our bath towels to the beach).We have decorated and furnished this property to a high standard and hope that you like it.

We are constantly making improvements to the property, so far we have widened the driveway and added a lovely new decking area with a motorised sun protection awning;

Please take care when driving in or out of the property - we recommend that you reverse into the driveway
The property is no smoking throughout and we do not accept dogs of any type (sorry but it was a hard decision we had to make)

Great for bus stop to Torquay or Dawlish, shops round the corner. Feels like home, lots of stuff in the house, books, maps & plenty of kitchen items. Only negative was the light coming into the main bedroom at night...but then thats me!

Lovely cottage in a very good location

We had a great stay in this cottage. Very well equipped, convenient location. Walking distance to harbour but also close to a bus stop. Small selection of amenities within few minutes walk on a local high street. Parking space definitely a bonus. Would stay in the cottage again if coming to the area in future.

Anniversary break

This cottage is one of the best equipped holiday homes we have stayed in. It was a comfortable home from home. The cottage is close to local shops and restaurants, as well the bus stop for the short ride to the harbour and shopping area. We would highly recommend this cottage for anyone visiting the Torquay area.

A great place

St Mathias Lodge is just perfect - cosy, so well equipped and in a great location to explore the Devon Riviera. There is so much to see and do within easy reach. Bus services are excellent. There’s a good selection of local shops just around the corner.

Lovely cottage in fabulous location

Lovely cottage with a spacious main bedroom and modern bathroom. Great location too in what seems to be quite an quiet and upmarket neighbourhood with its own mini high street and great places to eat, especially Mr and Mrs Jones deli!

St Mathias Lodge

We found the lodge to be everything we had hoped for. Clean, high quality beds, bedding & towels and well equipped for all we needed. Plenty of eating places within a short easy walk. Perfect location for walks to nearby coves and beaches along lovely country lanes. We would highly recommend a stay at the lodge.

Absolutely stunning luxury cottage

The photos do not do this cottage justice, it's absolutely stunning with all the trimmings luxurious from the bedding, beds, towels and kitchen. Had an amazing stay and it was just lovely sitting on the decking having a glass of wine in the sun late afternoon/evening. It was an easy walk in to Torquay centre about 15mins and not a difficult walk back. Smaller coves also within walking distance which were gorgeous. Really can't recommend this cottage highly enough and we are already planning on returning soon

A lovely holiday property

The Lodge is an excellent, well appointed holiday property in an excellent area.. On arrival, it was spotless and it was obvious that the hosts have gone to a lot of effort to make the comfort of their guests a high priority. We would definitely recommend a visit and hope to return in the future.

Brilliant property and owners. Third stay here the area is amazing and so may lovely beaches all a short drive away. We love Brixham and Broadsands. Cathy and Ken quick to answer any questions if you have any. Property exceptional and milk , tea and coffee machine waiting your arrival. I liked the fact that they had not hiked the price up like so many other places. Thank you we had a great time

Brilliant Place could not have wished for any more close to all amenities good public transport

property was very clean and stocked with everything you could need and more .Beds lovely and comfortable . Bathroom great powerful shower really soft towels. It was a bonus having off street parking. Nice touch having milk in fridge ready for a cuppa after a long drive.

About the host

Hosted by Ken and Cathy Ricketts

We purchased the property in 2013 and spent two years significantly improving it. Cathy was born in Devon moved away and has returned to roost, she works full time as a safety adviser and has been married to Ken for over 35 years. Ken is Dorset born and works as a self employed Gas fitter. We moved to Torquay in 1984 and both our children were brought up enjoying the local beaches and facilities. Over the years we have made good use of the water and other sports facilities in Torbay and have walked extensively on Dartmoor. We live approximately 4 miles away from the property so whilst being easily accessible we are not in our guest's pocket.

Why they chose this property

We were looking for a property in which to invest our time and money and fell in love with St Matthias Lodge which had suffered at the hands of a poor DIYer and was in need of love and attention. We immediately saw its potential with its location close to the lovely shops at Wellswood, within easy walks of Kents Cavern, St Matthias Church and Meadfoot Beach. The bowling green and tennis courts are located in Carey Park in Babbacombe. For the less active a short hop to the end of the road and you can step straight onto the bus and down to the harbour. The choice of restaurants, tea rooms and coffee shops makes Wellswood a great base from which to enjoy your Devon holiday.
