I think that resisting fascism is going to need to be one of those "Near Enemy / Far Enemy" things. The Far Enemy is obvious: the fascists themselves. Defeating them is always the ultimate objective, but it can't be the immediate focus of our attentions because unfortunately there's still the Near Enemy to deal with: neoliberal politicians with their heads up their asses; triangulators; technocrats; Clintonites; everyone who bows and scrapes for capital, who turns a blind eye to genocide, who failed so absolutely to offer any alternative vision or meaningful opposition to Trumpism. We can't overthrow fascism until we offer an alternative; we can't offer an alternative while the neoliberals are still stinking up the place. Retiring them must be our first objective.

the reason you're meant to read from a bunch of different sources and attempt to interpret and discuss them in school btw is bc your reading comprehension is based on your ability to discern different and varied meanings in a text

like some ppl on socmed wilfully misinterpret text and so many others entirely lack this critical skill and rely on tiktokers and youtubers to explain sentences to them and in the absence of someone to explain they just entirely go off their own projected vibes and make shit up

like it's. honestly frightening and bizarre, the takes i regularly see, that are so far beyond a "bad faith reading" and are literally not a reading. someone just saw three words they recognised, imagined a scenario they might be used in instead of reading the post, then got MAD

there's a catastrophic lack of reading comprehension in middle and high school aged kids right now and I'm honestly not sure what's causing it because it can't just be their english classes, english teachers have not particularly changed in the last ten years, there are good ones and bad ones just like there have always been. idk if it's something going on in elementary or something going on at home or just what happens when very small children are exposed to fast form entertainment/education constantly from a young age or what. there's a frustration with things not being immediately understandable and immediately finished. kids get bored very quickly and won't sit with things or think about them or puzzle them through in their minds in a way that we previously associated primarily with ADHD, and as much as I theorize about it, we really have no concrete evidence about what precisely is causing it.

#people have been saying 'well COVID' for the last 3 years but idk man#the longer we get from COVID the less that seems like a valid excuse#one thing is for sure: post COVID laxity in education is exacerbating the problem pretty severely#bc when you combine it with the mentality of 'progress kids to the next grade no matter what' what happens is the problem is never resolved#and they just keep getting pushed to the next grade level where they're then pushed again after doing none of the work.... until suddenly#they've graduated high school :')

(nota bene: I am aware OP is British, I am also aware there's a similar problem of lack of reading comp in British pedagogy, but I am not British myself and cannot speak to the reasons for it in the UK, so this will be strictly about the US problem, with apologies. I am including sources, if folks from the UK or other countries have similar sources on educational trends, reading, etc I would really like to read them)

Progress kids to the next grade no matter what = That's No Child Left Behind in action! NCLB is also why programs like Reading Rainbow were cancelled. There was suddenly no more funding to put towards programming that taught kids to like reading, because that wouldn't give them better test scores, and test scores had to be better than last year's every year or a school's government funding would get cut, according to NCLB. There's also been a disturbing trend in pedagogy for the past few decades that has been ignoring phonics in favour of literally just guessing. In some parts of the US, they have stopped teaching children the basics of ABCs just giving them a book and telling them to guess. Source: (1) (2) (3)

I tried going to college in 2019, while I was on the street, because I was taught all my life that going to college meant unlocking a tier of jobs that actually paid a living wage rather than being relegated to only fast food or cashier or other hard labour that my body literally broke down from doing (I'm aware this is a fallacy, and was somewhat aware then--but I was homeless and it was kind of my only path toward getting housed). Well, I managed to get into a college that started in Sept of 2020. By the time I got there, of course, the pandemic had started, and so I gave up my spot in the dorms and committed to my entire four years being long-distance.

I immediately found that my fellow classmates were astonishingly... ah... ignorant, to put it kindly. Even more than I remembered high schoolers being when I'd last been in high school--in 2002-2005. When I spoke to some of the professors that I got along with and would talk to me outside official business, they included the English teacher, who commented that yes, every year her students got less and less literate and more extremist, and it was worrying her.

Changes to fundamental education take decades to fruit, and in this case, NCLB + the rise of extremism that started after the twin towers fell took twenty fucking years to produce the kids that are now just entering adulthood and displaying just how illiterate and manipulated they are. One of my classmates was already in an MLM cult at just 18, and ALL of the boys were in the Manosphere. There was just no independence in any of them, they were always looking to whatever authority they'd decided to obey unquestioningly--no rebels, not even anyone that liked fictional villains??? Because, and I quote, 'villains are bad'. ??? This was at a college in the middle of Los Angeles! In 2020! I... what??

And I tell you all of that to say this: that is the result of something that started way back when yet another wildly incompetent republican was president, and all his cronies were doing horrific things daily. Remember when Rumsfeld would just come out with a public statement that essentially boiled down to 'I don't know where, I don't know when, but something awful is about to happen' like, every day? And that sort of hand-wavy prognosticating was used to rationalise the Patriot Act, and the TSA, and all kinds of erosions of civil liberties? I barely remember this, but I remember the adults (gods rest you, Robin Williams) making terrified jokes about it.

We are seeing the fruit of not Covid, not the Trump administration of 2016, but of George W Bush's administration. That is how long it takes for damage to our kids' education to become apparent.
