💙 Building it back, stone by stone and seal by seal by KizuKatana

M, WIP, 49k, Wangxian

Summary: It had been over 200 years since the war between cultivators left more than half the land ravaged and uninhabitable and the practice of cultivation punishable by death. Despite the risks of being caught as a practicing cultivator, Wei Wuxian took on the hunt of a dangerous yao that had destroyed a small village and killed all of the civilians. While searching for the demon, he encountered a mysterious cultivator dressed all in white. Wei Wuxian was excited to finally meet another cultivator, but instead of greeting him or making pretty much any conversation at all, the man attacked Wei Wuxian on sight. - - - - - - There is NO WAR in this fic. This takes place two centuries after the war happened, and it has a sort of post apocalyptic vibe. This is a story of rebuilding and finding safety. It's about found family and forming a new society away from the old one that persecuted them. Kay's comments: Kizu is back with another banger! I'm so hooked on this story and this one is for everyone who's here for regular updates, because they are coming and they are amazing. As always with Kizu's stories, the world-building is amazing and I really loved what we saw of Wei Changze's and Cangse Sanren's origins so far (though they are already long dead by the time the plot happens). I'm also really curious to learn more about Lan Wangji and for him and Wei Wuxian to clear out their unfortunate miscommunications~ I'm also living for Wei Wuxian's very literal found family. Excerpt: “I never thought I’d see another cultivator,” Wei Wuxian said, half in shock. He had been searching for years to find any sign that he was not the only cultivator remaining, and abruptly being confronted with living proof that he was not alone was something he hadn’t been braced for. The man narrowed his eyes, his face a cold mask that gave little away. “Leave,” the cultivator said warningly. Wei Wuxian blinked at the unfriendly, cold tone. He had been so excited to finally have met someone who was like him that the rejection cut a lot deeper than he was used to. The man was dressed in traditional cultivator robes, something that even Wei Wuxian’s mother had stopped doing within days of coming down from the Mountain given the danger being caught even owning them would bring. How could the man be so fearless in his appearance? Maybe it was because, unlike Wei Wuxian, this cultivator was not alone. Perhaps he had a community to return to: People to look out for him. People to train him. People to help him if he were injured. All the things Wei Wuxian did not have. “Are you alone? Are there others? Where have you been staying?“ Wei Wuxian asked, one question tumbling excitedly after the other. Instead of replying, the man drew his sword and attacked.

pov wei wuxian, post-war, alternate universe, canon era, rogue cultivator wei wuxian, rogue cultivator lan wangji, burial mounds ensemble as family, families of choice, literal found family, orphan wei wuxian, hurt/comfort, injury recovery, strangers to lovers, misunderstandings, miscommunication

Kay's comments: This story played out wonderfully and I was always delighted to see it update, definitely going to re-read it too, now that it's complete. It was great to see so many other characters appearing as well and the Lan family feels in this one were incredibly strong. I also really loved Nie Huaisang's eventual role. Highly recommended!

Throwback Rec

~*~

Original rec by Kay. Bookmarked on June 29, 2024.

Mojo's comments: Great story, with very thoughtful world building. The premise is that cultivators have impoded and been hunted nearly to extinction by the Emperor for the past several hundred years. Wwx, after being injured by Imperial Guards, finds a unique refuge in the Blighted Lands, and starts slowly rescuing people (the Wens, LWJ, etc.) They discover manuals and pool their ancestral stories and slowly rebuild a cultivator society.

I'd like to recommend this story They have a really engaging storytelling style and I was obsessed with this fic while it was being posted. All their other works are terrific as well. Thanks! @fiercelynormal

[Note: This story was originally recommended for Rewind 2024. However, it first started posting in 2023.]

Summary: A night-hunt goes wrong, and Wei Wuxian is scapegoated for the death of the Jiang Sect Leader and the destroyed core of the Jiang Sect Heir. As punishment, his core is taken and given to Jiang Cheng, and he is stripped of his cultivation credentials and expelled from the sect. What everyone forgot was that Wei Wuxian was wearing the standard issue body camera that each cultivator wore on training missions and high-risk night-hunts. Struggling to make ends meet, Wei Wuxian finds his way to Caiyi Town with the doctor who performed the surgery, a partial core still secretly in place. His application to work at Cloud Recesses is summarily rejected by the hard-edged Second Jade of Lan after an unfortunate initial encounter. But things change when someone hacks into the Jiang systems and releases the footage of what happened. [First part of the title is a quote from Shakespeare, but this story is not based on that one!]

How come I had to find out about KizuKatana's latest WIP by accident, huh?? I'm shocked, *shocked* that it hasn't turned up in ficfinderds or recs yet. (That I know of.) It's all hopeful but the backstory is all tragedy, and I love it to bits. Everyone should be reading this!!! @mreisse

~*~

I have a recommendation for you. Its a wip and its only about halfway finished but its really interesting with a well written plot so far.

Its about Wei Wuxian trying to survive after a war that happened between the cultivation clans 200 years ago, resulting in cultivation being outlawed. It is a WangXian fic but its mostly WWX centric at the moment with LWJ showing up later.

Its fine if you don't post it on your blog but I think its really interesting and you might like it. :D @laylamae1930

🔒💙 Caught in 4k

E, Series, WIP, 184k, Wangxian

Kay's comments: The series is still a WIP, but the main story is complete! I am so weak for Kizu's modern AUs with cultivation, they are great. Especially the world building and how the cultivation society might function in a modern AU shines in this story. Definitely not a story for fans of the Jiang family, but a story for everyone who wants to see some retribution for the things Wei Wuxian went through. Here, Jiang Fengmian dies during a night-hunt accident where Jiang Cheng's golden core gets destroyed and Madam Yu makes Wei Wuxian give his golden core to him, unfortunately for her, his body-cam is still filming everything. Wei Wuxian finds himself taken in by Wen Qing and her family and we get the sweetest found family and Dadxian vibes here and then meets Lan Wangji as well, who's highly judgemental at first but soon finds himself drawn to Wei Wuxian as well. This story really got it all, the drama, the horny, the softness, the restitution & humor. Excerpt: Still Wei Wuxian forced himself to at least try one last time. “You could also interview me. Have me talk to your best talisman experts,” Wei Wuxian said, forcing himself to keep the desperation out of his voice. “Interviews are scheduled based on receipt of proper credentials and references.” “I don’t have any, at least not right now. But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t be a great teacher.” “No references, no interview.” “Come on. Look, ask me anything about talismans. You’re an experienced cultivator, right? So you must know enough to at least interview me to see if I know what I’m talking about.” “Simply ‘knowing about something’ is not sufficient. Our lecturers are renown cultivators, and masters in their fields. No references, no interview.” Wei Wuxian felt frustration well up in him, especially at the reminder that Lan Wangji didn’t see him as a cultivator. No one would, in his current condition. Why would they? He didn’t have a functional core, which was the main scale against which all cultivation efforts were measured. He thought he had done a good job of not getting his hopes up about the teaching position, but the suffocating feeling constricting his chest was calling him out for being a liar. He should have known better. Why did he never learn? Some people had luck on their said, but Wei Wuxian had never been one of them. “Right. Of course. Because it would be impossible for someone who wasn’t born to the fucking clan nobility to ever actually be good at something, and the cost of taking the mastery test makes sure that other people can’t do it!” Lan Wangji’s lips parted slightly, like he might say something, but his expression was as opaque and emotionless as before. Wei Wuxian didn’t need to sit around and listen to him defend the clan system. “Good to know that the Lan are just the same as all the other sects,” Wei Wuxian continued, his lips twisting into a sarcastic smile. “Thanks for making that clear.”

pov alternating, modern setting, modern with magic, yu ziyuan being an asshole, dysfunctional jiang family, jiang family bashing, canon divergence, golden core reveal, burial mounds ensemble as family, golden core transfer, golden core transfer fix-it, top lan wangji/bottom wei wuxian, dual cultivation, strangers to lovers, misunderstandings, meet ugly, families of choice, hurt/comfort, emotional hurt/comfort

That "Wangji" guy's profile pic was obviously fake, but Wei Ying admired his art skills by KizuKatana

E, 16k, Wangxian

Summary: Wei Ying put on his best smile, which had never failed him in the past, and rapidly tried to make the mental pivot from ‘meeting an awesome if slightly dishonest graphic artist’ to ‘trying to hook up with the hottest man ever to have existed’. Never let it be said that Wei Ying’s mind was not a thing of infinite agility, when given the right incentive. - - - Wei Ying had just finished an intense, two-month project and was looking forward to going back home. After a cancelled flight, he decided to try to find some companionship to take his mind off spending yet another day in his empty hotel room. He didn't know anyone in town, so he used a hookup app and came across a profile picture that is OBVIOUSLY fake, but the art was amazing. Wei Ying decided to messege the guy and meet up, planning to call him out for the fake pic but mostly he just wanted to talk to the guy about what program he used to make the image. It turns out, the image wasn't a fake. Kay's comments: Oh wow, how did I miss reading this story when it first came out?? It was incredible, the dynamics between Wangxian were amazing, the pining was super strong in this one and the storyline about Lan Zhan's profile having to be fake but nope, turns out his dick is THAT big. The angst built really beautifully as well, which made the resolution all the better. It was also really hot. Excerpt: He scanned the tables… and froze. Holy shit. The photo had not shown ‘Wangji’s’ full face, but there was no disguising that perfectly chiseled jaw and lush, pink mouth from Wei Ying’s artist’s eyes. But it wasn’t just the face that was the same. The man seated at the table near the window of the shop was clothed in a fitted, white button-down shirt that made it clear that the breadth of the shoulders was no exaggeration, either. Wei Ying’s gaze went helplessly to the large hands that were resting elegantly on the small table, where a white porcelain cup of tea steamed gently. Wei Ying was so fucked. He was not ready for this. He swallowed, forcing himself not to think about the rest of what that photo had revealed. ‘Wangji’ was not a graphic artist. ‘Wangji’ was a work of fucking art, and Wei Ying was not prepared for this.
